Support from management

Upper management has a unspoken policy that Sergeants are never wrong. Their staff suffers for it.

Internal Communication

The poor leadership of of Sergeants, Lieutenants and Majors goes unchecked because the truth never makes it to the ears that need to hear it.

Career Development

Due to the size of the department, individual training opportunities and development are far and few between.

Overall compensation for your work

The benefits are the best in the business. The salary is starting to fall behind other surrounding jurisdictions.

Office / Work Environment

Several supervisors are totalitarians and hyper micro managers. Makes working for them miserable and creates a hostile work environment. Upper management dismisses the claims and allows it to continue.

Job Security

If they want you gone, they will find a way to fire you. The "cop for life" tradition does not exist here.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Stop allowing a hostile environment to propagate itself. Stop supporting supervisor infallibility because it is destroying the department from the ground up.

What I like about the company

The benefits are amazing.

What I dislike about the company

There is no movement due to its size. There is only 1 specialized unit with no intention of creating others. Only 2 officers out of 8 eligible officers expressed interest in becoming Sergeant. This sais a lot about the working conditions. There is an unwritten policy that all supervisors are never wrong. If there is a poor decision for discipline or anything else, it always stands without regard to the effect it has on moral or an officer's future. If the supervisor is corrected, it is behind closed doors but the bad decision is always enforced.
