Overall everyone wants what is best for the students and each other. There are some politics that get involved sometimes and some personal differences try to get in the way of the work.
Support from management
Communication is HUGE. Be sure to ask questions of your administrators specific to their classroom observations. Their job is to help you teach effectively, use that resource. Sometimes the administration is weak on checking on and/or communicating with staff.
Everyone is ready to listen and help wherever they can. Make sure you ask questions and implement suggested strategies to improve your classroom.
Freedom to work independently
As a classroom teacher you pretty much call your own shots. Probably the most 'autonomous' teaching position I've been in.
Communication will happen as much, or as little, as you let it (one of the drawbacks to being so autonomous). Make sure you open lines of communication and support with your colleagues/administrators and keep that communication active.
Office / Work Environment
Great support staff, good facilities, safe environment.
Teaching can always consume everything you do if you're not careful. However, this school doesn't have unreasonable expectations of their teachers.
They project an image of being a "family" which many employees would agree with. However, there are several who feel that they have been shunned due to opinions or teaching practices.
Your job is secure--unless it isn't. My contract wasn't renewed due to "poor classroom management". However, some of my colleagues seemed to think that it may have also been due to some reorganizing.
Teaching will always be challenging because every student who walks through the door is different and needs to be taught in their own way.
Inclusive / Diverse
There is a general rule in education that you must be willing to try new and different things in order to become more effective. If the "new" thing is something that you've come up with you might have to convince others of its validity.
Suggestions for improvement
- More effective communication, a recognition that both ends of the building are working towards the same goal using different methods, an agreement to air differences in private with the individual in question (a.k.a. no gossip).
What I like about the company
Allowed you to make your own educational decisions. Treats their teachers with respect in front of the kids.
What I dislike about the company
Sometimes seemed to have favorites within the school staff and to turn a blind eye to some problems.
