15 companies in male-dominated fields that care about gender equality

Jun 4, 2019

Gender equality has always been an important category of work life, but it is especially important today in light of the recent major injustices against women’s rights that have taken hold of the political spotlight (as of the writing of this article).

Sure, we are way better off with gender equality than we were a hundred years ago. But given that there is still a major gender pay gap across industries, women are still underrepresented in many lines of work, and women’s rights are still being undermined…we’ve all got a long way to go!

To stick to the positive side of the Gender Equality discussion, we decided to spotlight a number of companies in typically male-dominated industries such as IT, Engineering, and Consumer Electronics, who are actually doing well with gender equality in the workplace and are making it a priority. Read on to see who those companies are (in no particular order) – who knows, maybe you might be interested in working at one!

15 companies in male-dominated industries that care about gender equality: Spin Systems

Spin Systems, or SpinSys, is an IT company headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia with branch offices in Charleston, SC and San Antonio, TX. They help companies create business intelligence from big data problems and take the complexity out of building and migrating applications into a private or public cloud.

While it’s a matter of fact that working in an IT company such as Spin Systems is not as popular among female workers as other industries are, Spin System nevertheless fosters an environment that is welcoming to both men and women – with a “family oriented atmosphere that cares about their employees” – and actively searches for strong female job candidates and employees. Some attractive benefits about working at Spin Systems include flexible work hours, remote work, tuition reimbursement, nap rooms, onsite gym and the opportunity to feel truly supported; one employee says that the “work environment is AMAZING” and “any need that I have asked for has been provided to me [as an employee]”.

Akamai Technologies

Akamai Technologies is the leading content delivery network (CDN) and cloud service provider headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the United States, responsible for serving between 15% and 30% of all web traffic. As an IT company, Akamai also struggles to attract as many female employees as male employees, but that doesn’t stop them from having an amazing environment that is welcoming to all. Employees openly share that there is “phenomenal work life balance” at Akamai, and that it’s “a great environment to grow and thrive in. I started less than six years ago as a contracted marketing coordinator and I’m now a manager with more chances to grow ahead of me. My work is very challenging and for the most part, I feel super valued by my boss and upper management.

Ultimate Software

Ultimate Software is a technology headquartered in Weston, Florida that specializes in HR software solutions and HR payroll to help companies with human capital management and benefits. Their flagship product is UltiPro, a cloud-based human capital management solution for businesses. The company operates with a commitment to always put #PeopleFirst and has been recognized as One of FORTUNE’s Best Companies to Work For, Best Workplaces for Women, and Great Workplaces for Millennials, which is a testament to the type of supportive workplace Ultimate Software has for all employees – men or women.

One employee says that “for me it is a privilege to work in this company for everything that [the company] has helped me and allowed me to grow professionally.” Another shares this about gender equality at Ultimate Software: it’s a “fairly equal distribution of men and women throughout the company at most levels, including executive”.

SafeStreets USA

SafeStreets is ADT’s oldest, largest and most respected Authorized Dealer, operating in 44 states and the District of Columbia with a network of over 900 employees across 5 locations nationwide. It is in the Security industry, which is a male-dominated industry just the other industries that make up this list – IT and Engineering.

With over twenty years of growth and success and with many of its long-term senior-level employees starting out as entry-level employees, SafeStreets proves to be an amazingly supportive employer for its employees, both male and female. The company scores over 4 out of 5 stars across all categories of work-life including work-life balance, teamwork, job security, company culture and more. One employee shares their story: “I have been with Safestreets USA for 16 years which should speak for itself on how I feel about this great company. The management team is great and the opportunities for Installers to make an excellent salary while protecting customers make this the best home security installation company to work for.” Another puts it simply: “Caring staff from the top down. Excellent commission pay. Great teamwork.”
Gender Equality rating: 4.52 out of 5

Meditech

Meditech is a private company based in Massachusetts that provides software and information system services to health care companies of various sizes and types. Even though it serves other companies in health care – which is a female-dominated industry – it’s actually IT and software company, which means the workplace naturally tends towards more male employees. This doesn’t mean it’s not a female-friendly company, though; the company scores high on gender equality based on 70 reviews from current and former employees.

One employee shares that “[They] treat employees well and generally management rolls up their sleeves when needed” and another gushes that “I love the culture and continuing evolution in our industry. They have a great work life balance and plenty of offices to work from with remote options too.”

SimpliSafe

If you’ve ever searched for a home security system, you may have heard of SimpliSafe. SimpliSafe is a Boston, Massachusetts-based home security company that produces and sells self-installed security systems that connect to a central monitoring center. Like other security companies, SimpliSafe isn’t a company that many female workers flock to. However, given its strong gender equality rating and positive comments from current and past employees, it’s one that female job seekers ought to pay attention to.

“The company treats its employees fair and respectfully“, says one reviewer. Others admit that “This is one of the only jobs I’ve felt great and want to go to work every day,” and that SimpliSafe “is a great comfortable place to work that allows you to make [personal] decisions as well as help you grow.”

Kronos

Kronos, or Kronos Incorporated, is a relatively well-known company in the software industry because it’s used by so many companies to manage their workforce. For those who don’t know, it’s a U.S. based multi-national workforce management software and services company headquartered in Lowell, Massachusetts, with nearly 5,600 employees worldwide. And though the size of this company and the fact that it has many different departments (other than IT) means that it does better with employing females than other IT companies, one would still consider it as one company in a male-dominated field. That makes it even more refreshing to learn that they treat their employees, men and women, really well. Case in point: one employee shares that “when I went on maternity they paid me 100% of my pay for 12 weeks”.

Another employees share this: “This company is great for diversity and inclusion and they are more than accepting of anyone and everyone. Everyone is treated exactly the same which has always been respectful and professional. There are many opportunities to move up within the company if you can prove you’re reliable and good at what you do.”
Gender Equality rating: 4.26 out of 5

RCG Global Services

RCG Global Services, based in New Jersey and with offices throughout the U.S., is a global provider of digital solutions across mobile, web, cloud, and legacy platforms, with a focus on actionable data and analytics. They enable their clients, which come from a range of markets, to realize their digital ambitions to achieve measurable business outcomes. As a company that is heavily driven by its technology innovation, this means that they’re another IT company that happens to be male-dominated. That doesn’t mean that female employees aren’t welcome and sought-after; with a strong gender equality rating from it’s current and former employees, as well as high scores for diversity, teamwork and company culture, RCG Global Services proves to be a supportive employer for all employees, men and women.

One employee shares this insight about the company’s culture: “Even though our people come from diverse backgrounds, they all share a common drive and passion for what they do – on and off the clock.” That employee goes on to share that “At RCG we firmly believe working together, ensure’s that we continue to foster and sustain an open and inclusive work environment, and continuously enhance the recruiting, retention, and advancement of a diverse team of high-performing professionals.”

Having created widely popular games such as World of Warcraft, Diablo III and Overwatch, Blizzard Entertainment, Inc, is one of the most well-known and well-respected makers of computer games. As a video game company and part of the Consumer Electronics industry, the company leans very heavily male. But surprisingly for some, it still rates very well on gender equality, as well as company culture, work environment, and diversity.

Employees note that “Blizzard is a place that embraces who I am while also pushing me to do great work and be my best self.” Another states that what they really like about working there is “the care for the employees as well as the customers, and they care a lot.”

Eclaro

Eclaro is an IT consulting and recruiting company based in New York, NY, with offices across the U.S., Canada, and the Philippines. As a Staffing and Recruiting company that heavily focuses on IT placement, there’s a definite lean towards male employees. But despite that, this company whose motto is “The Right People are the Answer” definitely cares about its employees – both male and female: they have an impressive gender equality score of over four and a half stars, and also rate highly for support from managementdiversity and career development. Their employees proudly share that it’s a “family oriented company with caring coworkers” and that the company “truly cares about every one of their employees and treats them accordingly.”
Gender Equality rating: 4.67 out of 5

Salesforce

Salesforce is one of the most popular customer relationship management (CRM) solutions in the world with over 15,000 companies using its online platform. Since it’s considered an Internet or IT company, it sits squarely in a male-dominated working world. But given its size (it has over 10,000 employees) and its strong gender equality rating, it’s a company that is a welcoming place for female employees. Case in point: one employee shares that “Salesforce values its employees and I enjoy working there. The parental leave program is extremely generous.” Another loves how the company “allow[s] us to be ourselves all day and everyday“.
Gender Equality rating: 4.21 out of 5

Paylocity

Paylocity is a provider of cloud-based payroll and human capital management software headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois. Like other companies on this list, the fact that Paylocity’s main business offerings – and, therefore, job roles – are technology-based means that they likely get a lot of male applicants. But female candidates ought to give them a shot too, as being a female employee here has a positive outlook; along with their strong gender equality rating of four and a half stars, the company also fairly promotes and supports their female employees’ career growth with one employee sharing that “all the management on my team is female and there is a very even mix in all leadership“. Another shares that “Paylocity is a company that truly values their employees..it isnt just lip service.”
Gender Equality rating: 4.50 out of 5

Carbonite

Carbonite is a Boston, MA-based computer software company that offers a comprehensive data protection platform for businesses. While Carbonite does have a fair amount of female employees in non-technical roles such as in Marketing and HR, the fact that Carbonite is a software company puts it right there next to other IT companies in terms of having a majority of male employees overall. Despite this, the company does quite well with gender equality according to its own employees. They also rate highly for challenging work and company culture, which bodes well for female job seekers who also value those aspects of work-life.
Gender Equality rating: 4.14 out of 5

Rackspace

Rackspace is a cloud computing company based in Windcrest, Texas that aims to make it easy for companies to manage private and public cloud deployments. With over 5,000 employees across many departments, Rackspace does manage to have a mix of male and female employees especially in the HR, Marketing and Customer Success departments, but of course they’re likely always looking to add more female employees to its male-dominated work setting. What’s helpful to know is that according to their employees, they also do well with freedom to work independentlychallenging workdiversity and company culture.
Gender Equality rating: 4.08 out of 5

Microsoft

Microsoft is a household name worldwide as a leader in technology, so it hardly needs an introduction. However, being a company firmly entrenched in a male-dominated field that still manages to have a strong gender equality score based on over 400 employee reviews – we felt like it was useful to include them.  One employee helpfully reveals this about working at Microsoft that speaks to gender equality specifically: “having worked in HR and Recruiting, I have seen and conducted the issuance of salaries, performance reviews, and hiring practices. Microsoft is totally open and punishes workplace discrimination of any kind.” Another reviewer shares that: “They care about their employees and try to do what they can to make them happy. Since I’ve been there they increased the amount of paid days off due to employee feedback which I think is awesome.”

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is defined as the voluntary commitment of businesses to include in their corporate practices economic, social, and environmental criteria and actions, which are above and beyond legislative requirements and related to a broader range of stakeholders—everyone influenced by their activities.

While not every business has a CSR policy in place, many do, and they can take on many different forms and have different impacts on society and the environment. Here at Eclaro, while we are involved with multiple charitable organizations, and take steps to help the environment, it is our involvement with and commitment to growing our school in the Philippines - Eclaro Academy, that really sets us apart.

The Philippines

The Philippines is comprised of 7,009 islands in southeast Asia and while only the 73rd largest country in the world by size, it is the 13th largest country in the world by population. Many don't know it, but it is also the 3rd largest English speaking country in the world. Each year, the government has taken steps to reduce poverty, and the situation has improved, but as of 2015, over 21% of the population were still below the poverty line.

Most concerning is the impact that poverty has had on children in the Philippines. One in every 10 Filipinos aged 6 to 24 years is an out of school child and youth (Philippine Statistics Authority), which equates to 3.8 million children and youth that are not getting an education. According to the 2016 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey, for 20.2% the reason is the high cost of education or financial concerns. Nationwide, about 53% of the youth not attending schools belong to families whose income fall at the bottom 30 percent based on their per capita income.

Both are based in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines.

Cosmotec Contact Centre specializes in both voice and non-voice services, and has established itself as a reliable solutions partner for international clients with outbound and inbound contact campaigns in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and other Asian countries.

Eclaro already provides information technology and business process services from its Quezon City facilities.

The second acquisition, Cosmotec College, which is an accredited four-year degree-granting institution, has the distinct advantage of providing year-round skills training and scholarships to potential professional recruits to the IT/BPO industry.

“We believe the College will give us a competitive advantage by providing a direct pipeline of well-trained talent to the contact center and now to Eclaro in support of our IT and other BPO offerings,” Sheridan said. Cosmotec College grants diplomas in computer programming, computer hardware servicing, English proficiency, and call center operations.
