On my immediate team and larger division, we have a culture that is very supportive. Employees have significant autonomy to carry out and manage their work without micromanagement. The work environment is highly collaborative and flexible.
Support from management
This is intermittent. Not always proactive in problem solving and move very slowly with solutions that are not quick/easy for personnel issues.
This is overall true, but I do not think we have a culture of directness. Where people do not perform well or meet expectations, we do not have a track record of providing direct feedback.
Freedom to work independently
This is a terrific aspect of my workplace culture. Staff are respected and trusted to carry out their work. Most people are capable and have strong expertise, as such, we are given latitude to manage our work and it is regarded that most of us produce high quality work. Lots of flexibility to work from home or remotely as desired, create own hours, etc.
This has improved in the past 1-2 years with more deliberate communications, events, etc.
Fully agree. We are at least 50% women and have women in many leadership roles. I am very attuned to gender inequality and issues applied in the workplace, but am very proud of the degree of gender equality and lack of sexist attitudes or policies at EDC.
Attitude towards older colleagues
We have many senior staff who are revered for their long careers and the expertise they bring.
This is true to a degree. For mid-senior staff, you can grow if you take on more tasks in addition to maintaining your current workload -- it leads to very full plates and potential burnout. Career paths have not historically been very clear, especially as our organizational structure is quite flat.
Overall compensation for your work
I am paid above-average for my industry.
Office / Work Environment
Our offices are very comfortable and well appointed.
We do an average job of this at best. Not much attention paid.
This is generally not a problem for many, but we have good flexibility for comp time or flexible hours/work locations. No problems with taking time for appointments or personal commitments during work hours as needed -- everyone is trusted to do their work and make their hours.
We do high quality work and I would like to see us showcase that more.
Yes, agree 100%.
My office (DC) is good in this regard. Our headquarters are suitable but elevator is a bit of a hike.
I think we are average in that regard, but I do not feel that risks are ignored or unduly attended to.
My greatest challenges are not difficulty of work, but related to a too-small team with limited technical expertise. This leads to challenge for me with a heavy workload.
Inclusive / Diverse
I think this is overall good, and the organization is working to increase it with a diversity and inclusion initiative.
Suggestions for improvement
- No major improvements. I think our executive leadership has really made great progress with initiating some of the changes that have been needed, such as developing clearer career paths and processes, taking proactive steps to increase diversity and inclusion, etc.
What I like about the company
I have experienced positive career and salary growth in my six years at the organization. I am given a huge degree of autonomy to manage my day-to-day work, take on projects of interest to me, make my own hours, work from home whenever I want. I have been given opportunities to develop management skills through training and increased responsibility. The workplace culture is overall very positive, supportive, and collaborative.
What I dislike about the company
I think we have small areas to improve. We need to be better at telling our story and raising our external profile. Sometimes we underinvest in staff for initiatives we want to grow, relying on existing staff to shoulder those burdens on top of their day-to-day work.
