It sounds good on paper. The reality is that they don't value employees or professional development.
Support from management
Only micromanagement and threatening letters.
Actually had people tell me it's "not their job" to help me when that is specifically in their job description. This kind of unprofessional behavior is way too common.
Freedom to work independently
Constant surveillance and micromanagement
Nightmare to contact HR or anyone in management. Phone lines loaded with bureaucracy.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Ungrandfathered pay cut. You can work here for 30 years and they'll chop your head off the minute they get a chance.
None offered. If it weren't for the flexibility and necessity, I would have left long ago for something more rewarding.
Overall compensation for your work
Staggeringly low compensation for those with bachelor's, master's, and PhD levels of education. Minimum wage or lower in many states.
Office / Work Environment
You can work at home. Campus is nice.
You have some freedom to pick your schedule, but you're considered an employee. Regular work cancellations are unpaid.
Students, educational professionals, AND current/former employees hate this place. This isn't expressed vocally except on anonymous sites like this and glassdoor.
Very serious about "employment at will", which gives your managers the attitude of "employment at our mercy". Every day you run the risk of getting fired. Kiss up properly and you'll be okay, even if your performance is horrible.
It's only challenging given that it's minimum wage pay. If you consider that you're fighting daily against demotivation, it's very challenging.
Inclusive / Diverse
Some public lawsuits against this company regarding racism.
Suggestions for improvement
- CEO and all upper management should probably resign and repent.
What I like about the company
Long ago, I thought I was helping students and furthering education. In the last two or three years, most of the qualified people left for greener pastures. There's nothing to like anymore.
What I dislike about the company
Ungrandfathered +25% pay cut announced in 2018 to all TOEFL and GRE raters. As a result, quality of assessments will decline.
