Company Culture

The employees are great, work very hard, and I loved working with and helping all of them. Many of the mid-level managers are also very good at what they do and enjoyable to work with. Leadership is spotty in Senior Management.

Support from management

Senior Leadership does not set clear expectations, nor do they communicate well with the rest of the company. I felt like I was working in a vacuum most days and got little to no direction or expectations from executives. I also felt some executives had little empathy for the employees. Additionally, a leadership change resulted in unclear directions from above with poorly vetted and planned projects, causing effectiveness, productivity, and moral to decline.

Teamwork

Communication within individual teams seems good, from my experience. Communication between teams and departments is severely lacking to the point of being a hindrance to the overall effectiveness of the company.

Freedom to work independently

Yes, my team was effective and productive based on the measurements provided to us by several of the VPs in the company, even given that we were provided minimal resources to do the requested tasks.

Internal Communication

Early on, communication within the department was good, though receiving clear communication from executive management was challenging at best. After a leadership change, very little information of worth was provided. There was, however, plenty of "cheer leading" information available.

Gender Equality

Again, yes there are a few women in management positions within the company. However, my perception is that women are not treated equally or are as respected as men, especially when one woman executive was repeatedly denied resources for her department, while her male successor asks for and immediately receives many of those exact same resources.

Career Development

There is advancement within the company, but it is not widespread. Time available for cross training, was minimal to non-existent. Professional training was difficult to get approved, even if it was left in the budget.

Overall compensation for your work

Pay for any of the positions on the team was very low, based on professional salary guides (Robert Half, for example). Medical benefits were costly. While 401K is provided, matching didn't exist for years and was minuscule at best even when it was returned.

Office / Work Environment

Office chairs were OK, not the best I've had but not the worst either. Desks and personal work spaces were decent. However, room to actually do the work was minimal, with many individuals and necessary equipment to do one or more tasks crammed into small spaces. Some departments had 3-4 employees piled into a small conference room to share a table to do work. Environmental controls were dreadful. The south side of the building was either uncomfortably hot in summer or frigid in winter. There was very little in between.

Environmental Friendliness

No, the company is not Eco-conscious. There used to be recycle bins in the break rooms, but they were not emptied on a consistent basis, resulting in piles of trash. Eventually, people just started using the bins as additional trash cans. In the electronic/information age, the company prints a staggeringly high volume (well over 135,000 pages a month) that could easily be securely communicated to employees or clients electronically.

Work-Life Balance

Not a very good work life balance. My immediate team was acknowledged by Executives to be highly understaffed based on exhaustive, detailed, and accepted staffing studies, but approval for any additional team positions in order to complete the volume of work was always denied, even as other departments continued to expand.

Company Image

Yes, at one time I was proud to work for the company. However, I chose to leave the organization when I was no longer proud to work there.

Job Security

I did not feel there was any job security primarily due to what I perceived to be a lack of inclusiveness and diverseness for minorities and those of differing orientation. I also felt job security was lacking for anyone in the organization when employees were referred to as 'cogs in a machine, easily replaceable when one burns out'.

Handicapped Accessibility

There are elevators within the building and egress doors on the building's exterior do have "easy open" buttons.

Workplace Safety

No. Of the two known first aid kits, both are are almost completely empty of any meaningful first aid materials. Other than during first day new-hire orientation, no further training is provided on OSHA or any other workplace safety issues. To be fair, employees could ask for additional training in these areas, but the company did not provide annual scheduled workplace safety, OSHA, or HIPAA refresher training for existing employees.

Challenging Work

I enjoyed what I did, but not necessarily how it was done. Unfortunately, the team was provided minimal resources to complete tasks to "best practices". In that regard, the job was challenging and we were proud we were able to make things work or keep things working. Proud of the actual way we had to do the job... no.

Inclusive / Diverse

Though there are a few women in management or executives positions, I do not feel like the company is an inclusive environment. This perceived lack of inclusiveness (eg: minorities, orientation) is one of several reasons I chose to leave the organization.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Empathize with the employees, they are the ones that produce the work and keep the company running. When you treat the employees right, they will take care of the clients ten-fold better. Provide the necessary resources to get the job done right. Don't treat employees like "cogs in a machine" simply to be replaced when one cog burns out. Treat them fairly and professionally and the company and everyone within will do better overall. Finally: Lead fairly and by example and employees will follow. Don't ask employees to do one thing, but allow executives to do the opposite.

What I like about the company

The employees work hard and do their best with the tools and resources provided, they are friendly and enjoyable to work with.

What I dislike about the company

I felt Senior Leadership lacked empathy for employees. Communication from above is challenging at best and often non-existent other than "cheer leading" messages to the staff. Resources and leadership were difficult to come by resulting in high stress, burnt out employees, and a high employee turnover rate. Pay is comparatively low based on industry salary guides and benefits costly.
