If I could do it over, I wouldn't work here

Company Culture

Very siloed organization. Most people don't know anyone outside of their immediate work group. You could spend your entire time on a single floor, and not know everyone that works there.

Support from management

Upper management has a fair number of managers, but very few leaders.

Teamwork

Within your own team, it is usually pretty good, but try to go and get help or information from another group like Purchasing or Supply Chain, if it isn't one of their goals for the year, good luck getting a timely response.

Freedom to work independently

There seems to be a culture of "assume everyone is screwing around unless you are specifically filling your boss in" at F-M.

Internal Communication

Has been improving, but messages are far and few between. Trying to get any idea on how well the company is doing on a regular basis is next to impossible, and your have a 50/50 chance of getting a straight answer from your boss.

Gender Equality

There are a lot of women in leadership roles.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Once you get to be a certain age at F-M, you are practically untouchable. You could do a terrible job, and they will just move you around until retirement.

Career Development

Depends on what you want to do. You have to go find opportunities, as they aren't going to come to you.

Overall compensation for your work

My pay is good for what I do.

Office / Work Environment

The Southfield landlord is like a corporate slum lord. There are 4 elevators in the building, and at least one seems to be broken constantly. There has been a fully shattered window in the cafeteria for over 2 weeks. Their solution: Arrange a bunch of chairs and caution tape around the window so no one goes near it. The escalators to the cafeteria have never worked since I have been there.

Environmental Friendliness

No workstation recycling bins, just communal ones on each floor.

Work-Life Balance

This is one of the better things there. They generally don't get bent out of shape if you have a doctor's appointment, or meeting at your kid's school, as long as the work is getting done.

Company Image

No one really knows who Federal-Mogul is.

Job Security

Currently being acquired by Tenneco. There is a lot of uncertainty within the building.

Workplace Safety

Until recently, there was no real safety initiative. Now they put up a safety message every now and then in one of the working elevators or on the TVs as you enter the building.

Challenging Work

It's auto parts. The challenging part comes from actually working there. F-M makes investments in weird things, but not the things that people use on a daily basis. For example, our Sharepoint system is from 2010, and is somewhat incompatible with Office 365. This leads to crashes and lost work. The plans to upgrade aren't until next year.

Inclusive / Diverse

The workforce is pretty diverse, but I think some of the people that have been hired have done so so that they could "check a box". The best candidate is not always the one that gets hired.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Communicate more between groups and the field. Our customers will tell us what they want to buy if we just would listen to them.

What I like about the company

Most of the people there are really nice.

What I dislike about the company

The cheapness at every turn. Poor computers, software, and systems make work hard. Discouraging travel so that they can save money and hit their goals is not a way to run a business.
