Company Culture

It seems as though the mission of administration is to get rid of all tenured faculty and replace them with adjuncts or full-time temps. It’s more about getting the courses taught cheaply than quality education for the students.

Support from management

Budget cut after budget cut and yet we hire more administrators.

Teamwork

Faculty work well together when there is money. When times are tight (like now), they’ll cut each other’s throats to advance their program.

Freedom to work independently

As long as you maintain your budget.

Internal Communication

There is no internal communication. Administrators do not trust faculty. Faculty do not trust administrators. Administrators do not trust administrators. Example: when someone retires the tenure line goes back to the Provost to decide where/if to use it. It should be up to the Dean of the college that had the retirement.

Gender Equality

Should be a negative star system. As a male I see how females are treated and paid differently. They try to rationalize it but the gap is real here.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Don’t really see age discrimination here. Many older faculty.

Career Development

Don’t pay for advanced degrees but do have some free tuition for faculty and dependents.

Overall compensation for your work

Going backwards each year. Health insurance increases and less than CoL pay raises each year cause a good salary to buy less each year.

Office / Work Environment

Could be worse. It is much worse than 20 years ago. I had a job offer at another university about 15 years ago (about the time our current president arrived) and I turned it down because Ferris was a good place to work. Wish I hadn’t now, but that’s primarily due to the poor leadership.

Environmental Friendliness

There is good comradeship among faculty.

Work-Life Balance

Sometimes work spills over into life. Here work dominates your life because if you don’t take on extra work you’ll lose your program and then your job. So, because there are less full-time faculty there is more work for those of us left. Adjuncts don’t serve on committees or do assessment, we have to do all that in addition to teaching and running programs.

Company Image

We’re now “Branding” again.

Job Security

Talking of closing programs now. Still hiring administrators but closing programs to save money. Guess they haven’t figured out that programs generate revenue, administrators just suck it up.

Handicapped Accessibility

They do what is required by ADA.

Workplace Safety

Lots of cancer. Not sure if it’s coincidence or workplace related, but lots of cancer.

Challenging Work

There are always challenges like running a department on 24% less money than the previous year.

Inclusive / Diverse

Hasn’t changed more tha 1/2 of 1% in 20 years. Yet we pay a Vice President for diversity and inclusion a boatload of $$. Real nice guy, but could spend that money elsewhere considering the budget cuts.

Suggestions for improvement

  • New leadership. The president needs to move on or retire. Again, nice guy but time to go.

What I like about the company

The people (for the most part). Small town where you see colleagues at the store and say hi.

What I dislike about the company

Poor leadership. Leadership hides from problems.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Distribute the over half a million dollars wasted on the president and his lawyer to pay the faculty what they deserve. Take accusations of harrassment seriously. Do not try to cover up suicides, but address them publicly.

What I like about the company

They support research more than you would expect. Campus is nice. I had a great conversation with a student a few weeks ago for 30 mins after class. The annual author's prize has been pretty sweet. Excellent benefits though the union is losing power. Delicious food for a cafeteria.

What I dislike about the company

Administration paying the president more than my annual wage in overtime AND paying their lawyer half a million to fight the union. We've been off contract for a few months. Administration thinks everyone is replaceable. toxic corporate culture and in fighting is common among faculty. They're cutting the business college even though it makes the most money. Does not take HR issues seriously.
