It seems as though the mission of administration is to get rid of all tenured faculty and replace them with adjuncts or full-time temps. It’s more about getting the courses taught cheaply than quality education for the students.
Support from management
Budget cut after budget cut and yet we hire more administrators.
Faculty work well together when there is money. When times are tight (like now), they’ll cut each other’s throats to advance their program.
Freedom to work independently
As long as you maintain your budget.
There is no internal communication. Administrators do not trust faculty. Faculty do not trust administrators. Administrators do not trust administrators. Example: when someone retires the tenure line goes back to the Provost to decide where/if to use it. It should be up to the Dean of the college that had the retirement.
Should be a negative star system. As a male I see how females are treated and paid differently. They try to rationalize it but the gap is real here.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Don’t really see age discrimination here. Many older faculty.
Don’t pay for advanced degrees but do have some free tuition for faculty and dependents.
Overall compensation for your work
Going backwards each year. Health insurance increases and less than CoL pay raises each year cause a good salary to buy less each year.
Office / Work Environment
Could be worse. It is much worse than 20 years ago. I had a job offer at another university about 15 years ago (about the time our current president arrived) and I turned it down because Ferris was a good place to work. Wish I hadn’t now, but that’s primarily due to the poor leadership.
There is good comradeship among faculty.
Sometimes work spills over into life. Here work dominates your life because if you don’t take on extra work you’ll lose your program and then your job. So, because there are less full-time faculty there is more work for those of us left. Adjuncts don’t serve on committees or do assessment, we have to do all that in addition to teaching and running programs.
We’re now “Branding” again.
Talking of closing programs now. Still hiring administrators but closing programs to save money. Guess they haven’t figured out that programs generate revenue, administrators just suck it up.
They do what is required by ADA.
Lots of cancer. Not sure if it’s coincidence or workplace related, but lots of cancer.
There are always challenges like running a department on 24% less money than the previous year.
Inclusive / Diverse
Hasn’t changed more tha 1/2 of 1% in 20 years. Yet we pay a Vice President for diversity and inclusion a boatload of $$. Real nice guy, but could spend that money elsewhere considering the budget cuts.
Suggestions for improvement
- New leadership. The president needs to move on or retire. Again, nice guy but time to go.
What I like about the company
The people (for the most part). Small town where you see colleagues at the store and say hi.
What I dislike about the company
Poor leadership. Leadership hides from problems.
