Hillary “Jordan” Brewer, OB/GYN/WC

What attracted you to this company?

I knew several people who worked at FMC and that it was a great company with an excellent reputation, amazing providers, and opportunities for a career, and not just a “job.”

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

A typical day at work at work as the primary phone receptionist for the OBGYN department consists of answering incoming calls for the department, directing calls to appropriate person, scheduling appointments, and assisting patients in any way that I can to make sure that they have a positive patient experience.

What do you like best about your job?

I love the people that I work with and the patients that I am able to assist.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?

One of the bigger challenges I face in my role are working with patients who suffer the loss of their unborn child. Even after many years in this specialty, I feel each of these losses and my heart breaks every time. It is heartbreaking and most often I find myself sharing their tears.

Describe how your team works together.

I feel very fortunate to be a part of a team who works together. Even though this happens every day, I feel it is most obvious on days when we are shorthanded. Everyone pulls together and we make it through, even if it means performing tasks that you have not done before.

Charlotte McReynolds, SPC/ZH

What attracted you to this company?

I truly wish I could say that all of my life I always wanted to work for Florida Medical Clinic. I cannot say that, however, because up until ten years ago I did not even know that FMC existed. My husband lost his job due to illness when we lived in Jacksonville, FL, and he found employment in Tampa, where we relocated. After interviewing with four different facilities in Tampa, Florida Medical Clinic was the only one that seemed to treasure my nursing experiences and pay the price that I was requesting without even a blink of an eye. That meant something to me...l did not have to fight for pay that was equitable. The fact that FMC had several locations was also a plus.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

I work Monday through Friday at the FMC Ambulatory Surgery Center as a staff Registered Nurse where I work in Preop, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU}, and circulate in the Operating Room. My hours change from day to day due to what needs are present depending on the surgeons that are working specific days. Our focus is on patient care; giving the best care possible in all situations. I work with a fantastic team of people. These are co-workers that make me actually a little excited to  show up to work all week long.

What do you like best about your job?

I honestly feel that I am paid well for the jobs I do at FMC. I have been "topped out" at my present amount of pay for some time now, but FMC gives a percentage of bonus pay each year upon yearly evaluations. Not all facilities do this. Who would pass up a significant bonus once a year? Just another incentive to remain loyal to a great company.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?

Most of the time it is fairly simple to plan for your day by knowing the procedures being performed, what team  members  you will be working with, being familiar  with the patients,  etc.  The most difficult challenge is being prepared, however, for the unexpected, which can happen at any given moment.

Describe how your team works together.

The surgeons begin the  process by seeing their patients and placing those that need surgery on  a schedule. Our dedicated Pre-admission nurses  call all of these patients and assists them in completing a computer generated online passport of their medical history. The patients are called with their arrival times the day prior to their procedures. Upon  entering our  facility the  day  of  their  procedure,  the patient is greeted by our kind registration team. They are escorted into the preop area and prepared for surgery. The surgical team takes the patient to the surgical suites where they have their procedure, then taken to PACU to recover, before being sent home for  even more recovery.  If either of these teams do not do a complete and accurate job, the next part of that team would be set up for failure. We all work closely together and respect each other's part of our team.

What makes the company a good fit for you?

N/A

Do you have any tips for the interview process?

Everything you need to know you should have learned in Kindergarten... like playing well with others, knowing boundaries, respecting those around you, and just being pleasant and kind to people you work with and care for.

List your 3 favorite FMC perks.

I no longer have to take call, work holidays or weekends, and my pay is substantial. Those are all things that are important to me to maintain a life outside of work also.

Roxanne Phillips, NEURO

What attracted you to this company?

What attracted me to FMC is seeing the value that they have in medical care and the way that they take care of their patients.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

A typical day at work for me is helping patients get through their issues, answering patients questions that they have in regards to their treatment, scheduling  and answering the phones and assisting the doctor with various other projects that he may have me do.

What do you like best about your job?

What I like most about my job is the doctor and the people that I work with. We work as a team and treat each other like family.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?

The biggest challenge that I face in my role is meeting all the patient’s needs in such a short amount of time.

Describe how your team works together.

We create a positive work environment by supporting each other and blending each of our strengths to form a stronger team. We have built a trust between our team that makes us feel more like family than a team.

What makes the company a good fit for you?

Do you have any tips for the interview process?

Think positive, make sure that you know the reason why you want the job and what the job you are applying for is about. Dress to impress, always be on time and most important It is okay to be nervous do not over stress yourself you will do fine.

List your top 3 favorite FMC perks!

My top 3 favorite FMC perks would have to be our PTO, Christmas fund, and all the discounts from companies that we get as FMC employees.

Adriana Reeves, UCC

What attracted you to this company?

I had just moved back to Tampa from another state and I was looking for a job and I thought working in the urgent care would be a very interesting and different job to work.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

A typical day is about 12-13 hours in urgent care. We are constantly dealing with new things so nothing is ever the same. It is always something new in the urgent care. We deal with the simple flu to a broken bone or a minor cut that needs some stitches.

What do you like best about your job?

My coworkers make the job. They truly are a joy to work with and always work together.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?

Sometimes there are situations where patients come in with serious issues and that can happen when there are ten others in the lobby. It is hard to maintain control and make sure everything is done correctly.

Describe how your team works together.

We all get along great. Everyone is friendly and willing to help.

Company Culture

The idea of wellness programs, incentives are a nice motivation for working at this company

Support from management

I do not feel director has my back with patient staus. Also, there is very little feedback with patient/ MD appointments. There is little-no feedback about surveys which a lot of pressure is put on us for almost nothing.

Teamwork

Every man for themselves. It is discouraging to feel that your director does not have your back. Cleaning is a two person job, when going to the director for help with whole team compliance, no real resolution happens.

Freedom to work independently

Working in the clinic works well. We and our partner are free to use our best professional judgement. However, these therapist have DOCTORATE degrees and should have the freedom to make and correct the disagnosis of patients that are being treated. The politics are frustrating.

Internal Communication

Fair communication between providers and clerical employees. Tasks and DocHao are helpful with communication between providers however not a lot of help when communicating with front desk or feedback. I still don’t know how to get started on the wellness program???

Career Development

No. I opportunities for growth or pay raise here other than being here +5years.

Overall compensation for your work

I don’t think anyone will ever really be compensated for what they think they’re worth. However, other than time spent working there are no opportunities for pay raise. It’s frustrating and mostly discouraging.

Office / Work Environment

I think FMC could do more about making AC more accessibly to a department that has literally people exercising in all day. We struggle for room to work. Equipment that has been ordered in November just got out up last night. Also, our documentation system is from the 90s. Why am I document on Microsoft Word? FMC could do more about talking to EHR company about improving documentation for all departments, not just doctors.

Environmental Friendliness

There is no recycling.

Work-Life Balance

I spend more time with work related tasks than at home or asleep. Scheduling does not offer documentation time and no improvements are offered with EHR programs. Providers in this department are expected to perform clerical work, clean tables and use 1980s exercise program instead of focusing on patient care, staying up to date with documentation and improving billing- which is what brings in the money.

Company Image

Yes I hear good things about he company itself.

Job Security

Very stable. We are a very busy clinic.

Workplace Safety

We have safety procedures that are reviewed every staff meeting.

Challenging Work

I feel that I do my best work every day. I work really hard are making my patients better. I wish employees were recognized when there was good reviews from doctors, highest number of evals, best billing month. We’re not children who need gold stickers but happy employees do better work.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Better EHR which from what I understand will never happen because our system works for the MDs. Improved opportunities for pay raise. I wish I didn’t have to use my limited PTO for continuing education courses or had a way to make up time or even the choice to just be short on my work hours. Please don’t tell your employees that you give them pizza on staff meeting only because it’s cheap, way to show how much we’re cared about ...

What I like about the company

I like the incentives for being healthy and getting lowered rates in health insurance premiums.

What I dislike about the company

I wish I felt more comfortable going to my
Director about patient issues. Each time I’ve regretted not just going to my PT about patients. My manager is good but managing style is not. I don’t like that I can’t get raises. Other than that this place is nice.

Company Culture

Company culture is about what you would expect at any medium/large company. Nothing too special here.

Support from management

When management is in their offices it's not difficult to receive support. The problem is, usually, they're not at their desk, at meetings, etc. so it's very hard to get support from someone that isn't there.

Teamwork

We work pretty cohesively as a team.

Freedom to work independently

Not everyone who's job description allows them to work remotely is allowed to work remotely. Only a select few employees can work remotely. I wish more of us who were able to work remotely could do so. It would really benefit a lot of us.

Internal Communication

There is not a lot of internal communication at FMC. A lot of changes that occur here we usually find out about well after the change occurs. For example, a manager might be notified about an upcoming policy change, by the time it reaches the employees it's well after that policy was implemented. In the mean time, we may get asked why we weren't following a policy we didn't know about. Very frustrating.

Career Development

I've tried to move up in the company only to be denied multiple times with either canned responses, or no response at all.

Overall compensation for your work

Compensation for our industry is about average. Maybe slightly above average for some positions. No complaints.

Office / Work Environment

Office is VERY dusty, and that is no overstatement. A lot of us have breathing issues due to the amount of dust. Also, our cubicles/work areas are very tiny.

Environmental Friendliness

About average, I guess.

Work-Life Balance

Some teams are, very often, asked to stay late. Also, we're given little PTO compared to other companies.

Company Image

So-so.

Job Security

My job seems very secure.

Handicapped Accessibility

Handicapped parking spaces up front.

Workplace Safety

Below average because half of the lights on our floor of the office are turned off.

Challenging Work

Work is very mundane and repetitive.

Inclusive / Diverse

Our department is very diverse, and everyone treated equally.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I would love to see more of us in the CBO able to work remotely. A lot of our jobs allow us to do so, but most of us aren't allowed with little or no reason given. I feel the company is falling behind other companies when it comes to this. We're losing a lot of employees in this department due to them leaving for other companies that offer the ability to work remotely. I would also like to see an improvement in the amount of PTO that we receive.

What I like about the company

I like my compensation and job security here. I also like the building's central location in Pasco county. It's close to home.

What I dislike about the company

Middle management is lackluster.

Company Culture

Great company that believes in helping the community who doesn't discriminate against age or race or religious beliefs

Support from management

No complaint.

Teamwork

Most all employees help each other and care about reaching goals for all teams and departments

Freedom to work independently

No complaint

Internal Communication

for the most part good. Sometimes information doesn't get to everyone at the same time and sometimes your not real sure who is suppose to provide

Gender Equality

very diverse

Attitude towards older colleagues

As an older employee I have never felt it was a threat to my career and job here with FMC. Plus there are several who are older and have never heard any complaints

Career Development

It seems for those who want to "climb the ladder" it goes up to team lead or supervisor but not really any higher. I am generally not looking for this so it is something I noticed IF I were.

Overall compensation for your work

Overall good. Not sure how other companies are compensating as I have not searched out the field in 5 yrs. However, I don't think the PTO accrues enough when we are forced to use it for illness and need to take care of unexpected business days only events, and have enough left for a decent, restful time off for leisure and relaxation.

Office / Work Environment

Pretty good environment. Lots of encouragement lots of team building

Environmental Friendliness

Most all are friendly. There are a few that seem not to want to say hello or smile or include you in their circle but not many

Work-Life Balance

It is difficult most of the time balancing due to having to use all PTO for life's events and sickness, there is no time left to put towards a real quality restful vacation even if it is to stay home. The vacation time should be separate from typical PTO for the things that happen in life in order to balance with work. Even if it had to accrue at different rates. Life is filled with unplanned events and illness so this is a stress filled time, mixed with work stress, your life never has time to really rest and enjoy a time that is needed for work stress and life stress making it hard to not resent the company for not thinking of its employees needs that way.

Company Image

FMC is known throughout the community and surrounding communities. There are many patients and it's buildings and structures and outside landscaping is excellent and has the Florida theme

Job Security

Due to the growth of the company and people who come and then leave shortly thereafter feel it is pretty secure

Handicapped Accessibility

Stairs- parking- railings- elevator

Challenging Work

There is always challenge in the world of billing and medical accounts receivable and I feel this comes from the challenges the insurance industry throws at you. It is challenging when your on a timeline of completing reports in 30 days and changes occur constantly with payers.

Inclusive / Diverse

Very diverse in gender, race, ag

Suggestions for improvement

  • The only area I wish they would improve upon is creating a structured separate time for both PTO for illness and life's unexpected events and leisure time to relax so we can come back to work feeling rested and whole and ready to get back to work. It is hard to feel that way when you come back from illness or having to take time off for a stressful issue and have had no time to re- cooperate from the event or illness. Then only to realize you have no time for any type of vacation......which is ultimately negative in nature and resentful. Happy, rested employees make great productive employees

What I like about the company

Most everything else. I like the way they contribute to benefit the less fortunate of the community and how they are willing to spread the wealth around to help others

What I dislike about the company

As state.....the PTO structure not having separate real time off for relaxation. You either work when your sick, work during unexpected events and stress out, or work with no relaxation time. And if your lucky enough to not get sick, not have any events, and take time to relax and have a vacation.....you come back hoping and praying nothing comes up because although you took vacation, you now have no time for the unexpected.......FRUSTRATING!
