Company Culture

One was never complimented on engaging lessons or innovative ideas. Only the mistakes and lack of engagement were noted.

Support from management

Unfortunately, the administrators of this high school fail to give teachers the support they need to succeed. They are verbally and emotionally abusive to the students and teachers. Goals are unreasonable and conflicts are not resolved, but rather exacerbated. Respect is not given by the principal, yet demanded by her. Leadership is non existing.

Teamwork

While I was working at DHSA, my department was efficient and productive. We worked together and support each other during times of duress and success. Unfortunately, the principal did not appreciate our efforts and fired most of our team. Our data showed the most improvement overall the departments.

Freedom to work independently

No. Work was not distributed fairly. If the principal did not like you, you were asked to re-do reports, lesson plans, work with limited technology, etc.

Internal Communication

Slowly, information was given.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Long serving teachers were framed for wrongdoing to make them leave the building and destroy their teaching careers.

Career Development

Fordham does not provide professional development, but the DOE does. The principal does not forward the emails with the future workshop dates until it is too late to sign up.

Overall compensation for your work

I left and to this day, I have not been paid for the courses I was teaching beyond my allotted time, or approved time when I was doing research or completing after hours tasks.

Office / Work Environment

Technology was fairly new, but not accessible to everyone. For example, I had an AP group working on an Online Program. Computers were taken out of the room and keys were always mislaid.

Environmental Friendliness

This was fair.

Work-Life Balance

No consideration for your health or family. No compensation if one works late.

Company Image

No we do not speak highly of this school or the DOE for not investigating the negative and stressful situation at this school. There have been lawsuits bought against this principal and somehow the DOE pays fees and continues to keep her as an employee.

Job Security

It was never safe. I left when I found out the principal and assistant principal were interviewing students and prepping them to say lies about my teaching in the classroom.

Handicapped Accessibility

Elevators were always working. There were ramps throughout the building.

Workplace Safety

No problems related to OSHA.

Challenging Work

This is a hard question. As a teacher I always felt a sense of accomplishment at the end of my lessons. This has nothing to do with the work environment but my personal satisfaction.

Inclusive / Diverse

There was diversity as a culture. Unfortunately, opinions and ideas that did not match the principal's frame of mind were not heeded and were used as a way of getting you fired.

Suggestions for improvement

  • There needs to be a change in administration. Respect for the teacher must be employed for the teacher turnover to stop.

What I like about the company

I like the fact that it is a successful Arts high school. I t does have a strong drama/ arts/ dance program. The students have challenges and struggles, but they are wonderful to work with.

What I dislike about the company

Location in the Bronx.
