An overall extremely positive work experience, with lots of people will to help and teach. You get what you put into the job.
Support from management
Managers and employees interact frequently as needed, and managers are nearly always willing to provide support if somebody asks for it.
Lots of team based tasks, people rarely work alone on any given task.
Freedom to work independently
Everyone is in charge of their own work. I've never seen a manager "hovering" around employees.
Plenty of notifications regarding workplace changes, production updates, and communication between departments and company locations.
I always felt respected, part of the team, and valuable as an employee. Other women I knew there felt similarly.
Attitude towards older colleagues
If anything, the older employees have the upper hand in the company, as they make up the majority of the workforce currently.
Tons of training, as long as you're willing to attend the training sessions.
Overall compensation for your work
Office / Work Environment
For a manufacturing facility, I'd say it was as comfortable as could be reasonably expected.
Plenty of passionate Environmental Health & Safety employees interact regularly with everybody else, ensuring we maintain their environmental standards.
Some days required staying late, but managers I interacted with were understanding in terms of time off and requested vacation days.
The company is undergoing major changes. So while their is some upset as new policies and/or ideas come into play, GE seems to genuinely be working to make their facilities a better place for all employees to work in, and a better system to maintain their standards for high quality products.
For all the turbulence, I've never felt that my job was at risk.
Nearly everything in the facility was handicap accessible.
Lots of training, markings on floor help prevent accidents, all machines have emergency stop mechanisms to prevent injury before it can happen. As far as I've seen.
Constantly required lots of interaction with others, problem solving, and teamwork. Plenty of opportunity for critical thinking and planning.
Inclusive / Diverse
Definitely valued diversity -in people, ideas, and everything in between. Very positive atmosphere.
Suggestions for improvement
- Walking paths or little parks outside the facility would be nice, for a chance to walk & mentally slow down for a bit during lunch before jumping back into the busy part of the day.
What I like about the company
Interacting with so many other people has taught me so much beyond my own line of work that I have a much better understanding of how the facility operates as a whole --lots of people are willing to teach you what they know. There are so many friendly employees!
What I dislike about the company
Because so much of the workforce is older, there is still a lot of resistance to change (depending on the change). However, good communication between everybody can make implementing changes much easier for everybody.
