Company Culture

The company owners are born-agains.... They display their Christianity but in no way act very Christian. You never knew if you did a good job on anything but did know if they thought you did poorly. You dare not disagree with them.

Support from management

There is no leadership, In almost 10 years of employment there I (we) had only one review. No goals were ever set other than getting projects done in a timely manner. No plans for personal growth, education, training or adancement were ever set. There are no promotions there unless you are related to the owners.

Teamwork

There was no encouragement for teamwork. It was through personal work ethics that we formed teams and worked toether.

Freedom to work independently

You had complete autonomy, no one ever gave you any work direction. A complete and total lack of effective management. Luckily 90 percent of their employees worked hard but the ones did very little or goofed off all day were not "managed" at all.

Internal Communication

Seldom if ever was there any sort of a project meeting. If there was it must have been at an upper management level and was not communicated down.

Gender Equality

Some of the upper, upper-middle management had very sour attitudes towards women.

Attitude towards older colleagues

An older person I knew who still works there was passed for a promotion and raise. Their reason was, he was being "transitioned" out.

Career Development

No raises, no reviews, No career goals were ever set or even asked about. No promotions unless you were related to the owners. There were never any job postings, no chance to advance, someone new would just show up one day and even then there was seldom any introductions with the new person.

Overall compensation for your work

No reveiews or raises for almost everybody for as long as I was there. Pay was poor and when the job market opened up they lost ALL of their top talent. When I left I increased my pay by about $9 / hr, more now that I have been away long enough to get a promotion and another raise. Their old vacation schedule was nice and generous but they changed it. They did have a nice medical benefits package.

Office / Work Environment

The building is clean and nice, lighting is dim and poorly located. The cafeteria is a table in the dirty, dingy warehouse.

Environmental Friendliness

They treated their employees rather poorly. I think thats a pretty good example on their social awareness. They throw what should be hazardous waste into their normal trash.

Work-Life Balance

There isn't much overtime demanded of you and the hours could be a little flexable. But the pay was so low you had to work as much OT as possible just to make ends meet.

Company Image

I have no idea of what it is like now but in 2013 there was a group us us networking jobs and helping eachother to get out of there. We were always so happy for anyone who got out. We had an extremely poor image of Harland Medical.

Job Security

The job security came because this is a medical device company with very little competition in what they do. Work security also seemed to come to those who "chummed up" to upper managenent. Work performance had very little to do with your job security, you just needed certain upper management to like you. I should add that frequently they could not meet payroll, yet had enough money to remodel the executive offices.

Handicapped Accessibility

Their building is not ADA compliant.

Workplace Safety

There was ever only one manager who cared about or enforced any safe practices. His employemnt there did not last long.

Challenging Work

You did your job, thats it. No training for anything more challenging or job growth. If you were lucky, you would get to work with another good engineer who would share new concepts or technologies.

Inclusive / Diverse

Diversity? Absolutely not. You agreed witht he owners period.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Stop nepotism. Ownership step aside and hire talented, experienced management to run the company.

What I like about the company

The had some really great people working there.

What I dislike about the company

Lack of management talent.
