HCA Healthcare experience report

Central Coding Unit ruined this great job. The company has it's benefits though.

2.61

Company Culture

All medical coders are remote so you don't get a lot of interaction unless it's negative.

Support from management

They don't answer any question they don't want to. Multiple coders have experienced this and denied requests to be trained in other Specialties and other EMR systems.

Teamwork

Hard not to when it's mandatory.

Freedom to work independently

At the end of every day you fill out a detailed report of your production down to the 15 minute increments of what you did. You have to help who they tell you to help and receive help from whomever they decided assign to you. And this is Nationwide so it doesn't matter that they are likely from a different state with different rules that you don't know.

Internal Communication

Management either doesn't know or doesn't bother to tell you. Things fall through the cracks all the time.

Career Development

Multiple Coders have experienced multiple requests for further training be denied and there is no room for advancement.

Environmental Friendliness

Every response if you get any at all from management is very PC and usually doesn't even address the topic.

Work-Life Balance

Strict rules about schedule changes which make it difficult to have balance (you may adjust your schedule only once a year. You must ask for time off more than 24 hours in advance and you will be denied your PTO if there are other coders who asked for it off already.) And the last week of every month they make up a mandatory schedule with 10 and 12 hour days and that includes weekends.

What I like about the company

All coding positions are remote. The company supplies the computer and monitors. Only full-time is available and health benefits are an option. As well as 401k and PTO.

What I dislike about the company

When I started I worked for a division of HCA and it was a completely different experience than it is now. It was wonderful. Now that they've Consolidated all divisions of HCA into one Central Coding unit it is micro managed and insulting and frustrating.
