Suggestions for improvement

  • Only improvements should be made to the actual buildings

What I like about the company

During my time at Head Start, as an Advocate, I’ve been able to work closely with children and their families. Being able to see families bounce back from a personal setback (i.e. Loss of job, loss of home, etc.) has been the most rewarding experience. One of my assigned tasks is to help families set and achieve goals and when these families share their successes I’m just as excited. Additionally, I receive biannual training to keep me abreast of changes as well as learning best practices. Teamwork is encouraged and my team works well with each other.

What I dislike about the company

Some of the centers are very old and should be renovated.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Put cameras in all child care rooms with audio. Listen to your all your employees. I worked in a classroom with infants and toddlers where the teacher was constantly berating the children. She talked to them as if they were dirt. Except when a parent or another adult walked into the room. Equally disturbing, the site served meals not safe for infants and toddlers to eat; i.e. cook the veg please because children can choke on whole baby carrots, and other raw veg. When I mentioned this, I was ignored by the director and the teacher in my classroom. The other teacher brought in multiple toy choking hazards and even put pebbles in the sensory table when we had 3 toddlers that put everything in their mouths and one infant crawling around. Very unsafe. They need training in behavior management, safety for infants and toddlers and politeness as the teacher with me in my classroom was incredibly negative with children and teachers alike. They finely fired me when the teacher in my class had a meeting with them because I had told a parent that of course I would protect her child from being kidnapped by her biological father who did not have custody of the child . I said that I would call the police if he showed up there and I was fired because I can not get along with the other teacher! Hmm. Should have sued them because since I had reported their lack of safety that's why they wanted me out of there. One week later I met a woman from a nearby site who had sued them. This needs to be started within one month of being fired by your employer though. Easy job for me while i was there though. I loved all the children and parents, easy to write documentations, well paid for what was a fun job when I wasn't having to deal with the other teacher. She had a severe controlling personality and wouldn't allow the children to use the toys in any manner not spelled out for them. Not fun or pleasant.

What I like about the company

Good pay Other teachers were nice All trainings on their time

What I dislike about the company

Not able to change to protect the children.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Staff should be allowed to work more autonomously. We were hired to do a job. Trust we can do it. Micromanagement only causes supervisors stress.

What I like about the company

The philosophy is always family first. If a family member is sick or there is an emergency, I am encouraged to take time off to take care of my family. I am never made to feel guilty. When my son's illness required me to be out of the office for over a week, other staff covered for me so I didn't come back to a pile of work.

What I dislike about the company

Communication is an area of growth. Not everything is shared with all the necessary parties which causes some conflict.
