Since inception, our company’s core values have formed a foundation to guide decision making, establish the corporate culture and determine how business is conducted. Our values that we live by include:

  • Honoring the Lord in all we do by operating in a manner consistent with Biblical principles
  • Offering customers exceptional selection and value
  • Serving our employees and their families by establishing a work environment and company policies that build character, strengthen individuals and nurture families
  • Providing a return on the family’s investment, sharing the Lord’s blessings with our employees and investing in our community

While retail strategies change, Hobby Lobby’s core values remain. These values led to the decision to close all stores on Sunday allowing associates time for family and for worship.

Support from management

Depends on the manager. My assistant managers are more than happy to offer me help and support. My co manager will almost stop what he’s doing to help you & my manager has such a “don’t bother me” attitude I don’t want to ask him for help.

Teamwork

Teamwork with my store is usually not a problem. I like most of my coworkers and don’t have an issue working with them.

Freedom to work independently

Not really “freedom” to work independently. You’re told wether to work alone or work with someone else. Barely any time to spend working in your own department and then get yelled at during a department walk through when things aren’t done correctly.

Internal Communication

At my store, my co manager rocks. He is super awesome about getting along with everyone while also being stern enough to be a manager. You can feel comfortable talking to him about anything. Meanwhile my actual store manager is not easy to talk to and I feel like I have to avoid him at any cost.

Gender Equality

Although I think there are more women employed at my store i feel there are more than enough men that work there too.

Attitude towards older colleagues

At my store we have several older staff members and they get along great with everyone and age doesn’t matter in my store.

Career Development

Once again like I’ve mentioned, I’ve worked with the company almost 3 years and have been asked once about a full time position which I couldn’t take due to my school schedule. Now that I’m in a position to actually want a full time position, they won’t give it to me. All my boss cares about is saving precious payroll.

Overall compensation for your work

I’m never appreciated by my boss. I do at least 3 different peoples jobs when I work & am i never “compensated” for my hard work. Given I had my bad and good days, I work harder than most part time employees at my store & am never given any recognition and certainly don’t get a pay raise for it.

Office / Work Environment

It’s okay. Now that my store isn’t so new anymore things like the floors and the restrooms are getting dirty and not being fixed.

Environmental Friendliness

Hobby Lobby is terrible about recycling. We throw away more paper on a Saturday night after changing the sales signs for the next week than any other company i’ve seen. But we do baler our card board & return freight boxes back to our warehouse.

Work-Life Balance

A lot of times I will be scheduled days off & then asks repeatedly to come in on my days off instead of just being scheduled. Very inconvenient, especially if I’ve already made plans, but need the extra money.

Company Image

Hobby Lobby is stingy with who they hire because of company image. They want to hire bubbly personalities. “Clean” looking people. No tattoos, no piercings, no crazy hair colors & look professional.

Job Security

They’ll never fire me without a reason. I’ve worked part time with the company almost 3 years now and haven’t done anything terrible. But just because I won’t lose my job doesn’t mean I’ll move up in it.

Handicapped Accessibility

Once again, it’s okay. In my store we offer 2 wheelchairs & 2 registers with handicap accessibility. those 2 registers are the last registers and are only used during the busy seasonal time. So only handicap friendly during christmas time i suppose.

Workplace Safety

Somethings with workplace safety are beyond the control of the company, but I do get hurt a lot doing things like working our freight day & doing resets in the departments.

Challenging Work

Oh the strenuous work is challenging alright. Working long shifts & being on your feet multiple hours without adequate breaks is challenging. The work itself is pretty self explanatory after proper training but being schedule 8-4 and working 8-8 is not exactly what I signed up for being a part time employee.

Inclusive / Diverse

Since my store has gotten a new manager, we have hired a well diverse staff.

Suggestions for improvement

  • If I had to suggest just one thing it would probably be management understanding their employees and being a bit more lenient in personal matters. I had to call out out work for a week unexpectedly & was ridiculed about it for months & almost lost my job because of it.

What I like about the company

I enjoy my co managers & assistant managers. Most of my co workers, I love working in my department & of course my employee discount.

What I dislike about the company

I dislike the shady things upper management can say and do to make our (the management and staff at our store) lives harder and more difficult to enjoy working there.

Teamwork

We the 80+ of us that were hired worked great together as a team. We all thought we had a great chance of getting hired as told for FT potential.

Gender Equality

equal

Career Development

You can get FT if a dept lead leaves but that could take a year or more. Or if the lead cashier leaves you have a chance. Otherwise every position is PT for sure

Overall compensation for your work

Pay was fair, but the amount of work was was excruciating no matter what your age was

Office / Work Environment

They made sure we had water and Gatorade on hand for hydration but the first day no bathroom facilities were available for use as they were being built. If you were handicapped this would of been a disaster of a environment to be in, no way around the jobsite

Environmental Friendliness

No recycle bins , wood and plastic were not being recycled

Company Image

The company on cares about their image. Make sure no visible tattoos, no gauges in the ears, no more than 2 piercings on the ears showing. No tight clothes. Etc. No suggestive jewelry. They even said during the interview we do not walk the customer to the item, we tell them where the item is located as in the department and let them find it, we can not take away from our duties at hand . They are all about a goodie goodie image being prim and proper

Job Security

Did not matter how hard you worked. You are disposable no matter what. Step into any Hobby Lobby its like a ghost town. Handful of people working on any given day and when no one is looking at them , they do not smile. stressful environment

Handicapped Accessibility

no. There were no handicapped people on our site as it was impossible to be handicapped on the setup team. No way for a wheelchair or anyone incapacitated to be working there those 3 weeks it takes to open a store.

Workplace Safety

They stress workplace safety constantly. Report any one getting hurt etc.

Challenging Work

Work is very hard, labor intensive. Must be able to unload heavy boxes off trucks once a week and bring to the floor with dolly and unload during the day while customers are shopping before your shift is over

Inclusive / Diverse

out of 80+ hired, 1 black woman which was a department lead from another store, a black male showed up out of nowhere the second week, we had 1 Asian lady, 1 Native American male and the rest were Caucasian.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Do not tell the Store setup team on a new build site they have potential for FT. The only FT position is the cashier that gets hired and the department lead which usually comes from another store or if we are lucky we can get it. We are told the harder we work those 3 weeks the better the chance we can get hired on , its more like we are the animals that slave. The department leads that came from the other stores did smile nor converse with us like we were worthy enough other to bark orders at us. No great job or thank you for helping out . I could not stand how mean these women were. Oh and why were so many white people hired? we had 1 Asian, 1 Native American man, one of the department leads from another store was black and a black man appeared out of no where the second week . out of 80+ people that was the best you can do to be diverse?

What I like about the company

The 15% discount

What I dislike about the company

Everything else. They do not thank you for your work. They lied from day one on the interview. They also have the right to search your car on the premises as they see fit as they do not allow any weapons even if the law says you can have a a weapon in your car. If you refuse they can fire you. My local police department found that out of line. But it is their rules and they have it posted inside the store and in their employee manual you sign.

Company Culture

more like a cult.

Teamwork

teamwork of course you can not get anything done without this motto.

Freedom to work independently

NO. You follow exactly as instructed by your lead. You may be working alone in your dept but you will have a list of what has to be done especially on truck day and the eye in the sky is watching you.

Internal Communication

only amongst the dept leads. The workers find out from other workers what is really going on.

Gender Equality

equal men vs women hired in the group of 80

Attitude towards older colleagues

There were many 50+ hires in our group of 80 hired

Career Development

You can become a dept lead, but that is after you unload semi trucks & work really hard & wait maybe a month or maybe a year or 2 .

Overall compensation for your work

I feel in my opinion that for the strenuous, dirty, hard work we all did, the pay rate should of been more per hour as we were told by a manager talking in the break room on her lunch we were less expensive than labor ready.

Office / Work Environment

well, the department leads came from other stores and only 1 of them smiled and really talked to us nicely. The rest were unhappy & our thoughts were maybe, just maybe they were told to be mean to us on purpose? They did provide water & Gatorade to keep us hydrated for working so hard as the warehouse every day till the air started working was 90degrees +. I feel if you are doing a store opening its not a great work environment to be in unless your just there to make a paycheck & you do not care about being hired on.

Environmental Friendliness

just boxes are recycled. There are no recycle bins on the premis's for anything else. All Styrofoam and plastic from shipments go in the trash

Work-Life Balance

only day you do not work usually is sunday or maybe a day off during the week.

Company Image

My opinion is that the company image of "Christian Values" is not what I thought it was.

Job Security

No job security. We were hired as temp seasonal help. Even though we were told we had a chance of being hired on the harder we worked for FT or PT that is not so. See, they installed lockers on week 2 day 2. My co worker & I were discussing why only 25 lockers & this wicked manager who overheard us said "what did you think, we can not keep all of you, we are only going to keep 25 of you" so there you have it. down from 80 to 25. So I told her what I was told in my interview. "you will be watched & if you work really hard you have a chance for FT or PT" Manager in turn told me "you misunderstood there is only 1 FT cashier & the only other FT positions are dept leads. They come from other stores & for those depts that do not have leads then you if your good can get that position but you have to be really good" that is the only FT . So basically there are only really PT positions.

Handicapped Accessibility

If your a "build a store crew" you can not be in a wheelchair to do this job or on crutches. This is a very physical dirty job. However you do not know this until you are doing it.

Workplace Safety

We were the setup hires so we were building the inside of the store, as we quickly realized. There were many hazards on the floor. One had to be aware at all times.

Challenging Work

Very challenging. You need to be physically fit. You are lifting heavy boxes. If you are not a cashier, you are unloading semi trucks on truck day. That is you get a dolly and they load you up with boxes and your doing laps in the store to various departments for hours while the store is open. The truck can show up anywhere from 10am to 2pm. You are also opening the shipments & putting the merchandise away as quickly as possible before your shift ends, hoping you get it done before that time as you do not want to answer to your department lead why you were not quick enough. Oh btw, there are no scanners at the register. You need to know math, seriously. You will need to know what is on sale every week, such as jewelry, not all beads just glass beads or plastic etc. Then you need to math the percentage off the price & then math the sales tax into the register. You are not allowed to use calculators at the register. The cashiers are instructed to not ask you for a coupon, so please make sure you remember to use your coupon on your phone or print it out. This is physically & mentally challenging work.

Inclusive / Diverse

We were a group of 80 hired. In my opinion it was predominately white. We did have 1 Asian woman & 1 African American Man showed up on week 2. 1 of the dept leads was a African American woman. We were told all tattoos had to be covered, no more than 2 earrings in each ear, no gauges, no un-natural hair colors such as blue or purple allowed, no skinny jeans.

Suggestions for improvement

  • My suggestions are during the interview process of a store opening when hired as temporary seasonal help please tell the truth. Please tell each person the only FT positions are 1 FT cashier & Dept leads only if there are lead positions open. All others will be PT and only so many people are getting hired..25 etc. Do not tell us that if we work really really hard we have a chance of getting FT. That is so misleading. That is a gateway only to get us to work harder to get your store ready to open and you to let us go anyway.

What I like about the company

I have to tell you the only thing I like is shopping at the store with a coupon or when there are great things in the clearance department.
That is it. Not working for the company at all.

What I dislike about the company

How the workers are treated , How hard the work is getting the store built if your not "physically fit" or have "disabilities".
