Support from management

Depends on the manager. My assistant managers are more than happy to offer me help and support. My co manager will almost stop what he’s doing to help you & my manager has such a “don’t bother me” attitude I don’t want to ask him for help.

Teamwork

Teamwork with my store is usually not a problem. I like most of my coworkers and don’t have an issue working with them.

Freedom to work independently

Not really “freedom” to work independently. You’re told wether to work alone or work with someone else. Barely any time to spend working in your own department and then get yelled at during a department walk through when things aren’t done correctly.

Internal Communication

At my store, my co manager rocks. He is super awesome about getting along with everyone while also being stern enough to be a manager. You can feel comfortable talking to him about anything. Meanwhile my actual store manager is not easy to talk to and I feel like I have to avoid him at any cost.

Gender Equality

Although I think there are more women employed at my store i feel there are more than enough men that work there too.

Attitude towards older colleagues

At my store we have several older staff members and they get along great with everyone and age doesn’t matter in my store.

Career Development

Once again like I’ve mentioned, I’ve worked with the company almost 3 years and have been asked once about a full time position which I couldn’t take due to my school schedule. Now that I’m in a position to actually want a full time position, they won’t give it to me. All my boss cares about is saving precious payroll.

Overall compensation for your work

I’m never appreciated by my boss. I do at least 3 different peoples jobs when I work & am i never “compensated” for my hard work. Given I had my bad and good days, I work harder than most part time employees at my store & am never given any recognition and certainly don’t get a pay raise for it.

Office / Work Environment

It’s okay. Now that my store isn’t so new anymore things like the floors and the restrooms are getting dirty and not being fixed.

Environmental Friendliness

Hobby Lobby is terrible about recycling. We throw away more paper on a Saturday night after changing the sales signs for the next week than any other company i’ve seen. But we do baler our card board & return freight boxes back to our warehouse.

Work-Life Balance

A lot of times I will be scheduled days off & then asks repeatedly to come in on my days off instead of just being scheduled. Very inconvenient, especially if I’ve already made plans, but need the extra money.

Company Image

Hobby Lobby is stingy with who they hire because of company image. They want to hire bubbly personalities. “Clean” looking people. No tattoos, no piercings, no crazy hair colors & look professional.

Job Security

They’ll never fire me without a reason. I’ve worked part time with the company almost 3 years now and haven’t done anything terrible. But just because I won’t lose my job doesn’t mean I’ll move up in it.

Handicapped Accessibility

Once again, it’s okay. In my store we offer 2 wheelchairs & 2 registers with handicap accessibility. those 2 registers are the last registers and are only used during the busy seasonal time. So only handicap friendly during christmas time i suppose.

Workplace Safety

Somethings with workplace safety are beyond the control of the company, but I do get hurt a lot doing things like working our freight day & doing resets in the departments.

Challenging Work

Oh the strenuous work is challenging alright. Working long shifts & being on your feet multiple hours without adequate breaks is challenging. The work itself is pretty self explanatory after proper training but being schedule 8-4 and working 8-8 is not exactly what I signed up for being a part time employee.

Inclusive / Diverse

Since my store has gotten a new manager, we have hired a well diverse staff.

Suggestions for improvement

  • If I had to suggest just one thing it would probably be management understanding their employees and being a bit more lenient in personal matters. I had to call out out work for a week unexpectedly & was ridiculed about it for months & almost lost my job because of it.

What I like about the company

I enjoy my co managers & assistant managers. Most of my co workers, I love working in my department & of course my employee discount.

What I dislike about the company

I dislike the shady things upper management can say and do to make our (the management and staff at our store) lives harder and more difficult to enjoy working there.

Company Culture

Depends on the store, but in my experience, management was not encouraging or understanding. Had absolutely unrealistic expectations and would occasionally admit it.

Support from management

I was occasionally given impossible tasks which then had to be dealt with in a different method. But I was always able to ask questions and get more resources (i.e. fixtures) to do a job.

Freedom to work independently

Leave the cashiers to do their thing, left employees on the floor to do layouts.

Internal Communication

Would occasionally share numbers/ statistics in weekly meetings. Constantly told us ways we need to do better.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Had many coworkers above this age.

Career Development

Had training videos related to Hobby Lobby sales floor, but none of us were offered training to advance in the company.

Overall compensation for your work

Great and competitive starting pay. However, employees are not rewarded for the length of time worked there. All part time employees are paid the same no matter if they are a brand new cashier or a knowledgeable department head who has been working there for 5 years.

Office / Work Environment

Our store had no control over the thermostat, bathrooms were dirty and had not been updated in several decades.

Environmental Friendliness

We did have a cardboard compactor. No recycling or anything relating to the environment.

Work-Life Balance

Not sure of a practical way to support this balance besides letting their employees off on time, which happened rarely.

Company Image

I like what the company founders stand for, just wish they treated their employees at this store with a little more grace.

Job Security

I worked as hard as I could every day and was one of the only people at my speed and knowledge level. I never would have been fired.

Challenging Work

Not enough employees, a lot of physical labor on truck days, typically forced to stay past end of shift.

Inclusive / Diverse

Hired people of diverse cultures, ethnicities, and religions

Suggestions for improvement

  • I would certainly add scanners and bar codes to all of the stores to reduce cashier errors, decrease customer waiting time, quickly make price checks, be able to locate where an item is to be put away easily, and cut labor hours by eliminating hand-pricing with price guns. I would also consider giving more benefits to the employees such as a free lunch for increase in sales, etc. Pay would be based on the amount of time a loyal employee has put into the company and how well they perform, so as to avoid a lack of incentive.

What I like about the company

It has great and competitive starting wages. There are several different departments you can work in such as registers, fabric, frame shop, etc. Uniform shirts are provided by the company. Building had AC and heat. When closing, all employees left the building at the same time, which made me feel safe. Closed on Sundays. Employee discount of 15%.

What I dislike about the company

Inefficient methods such as a lack of scanners on the registers, no bar codes or ways to price check seasonal items. Being forced to memorize every sale every week, manually typing in prices. Long hours/ not getting off work on time. Not enough employees scheduled most days. Old bathrooms that appear unsanitary due to lack of updates. Toilets that don't flush correctly.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I wouldn't change any of the company workplace policies, procedures, culture, or environment. As I've been working there, I have mulled around ideas for company improvement, and weighed logical pros and cons... and I've found that the company's way of doing things has been extraordinarily well-thought-out.

What I like about the company

I have never been so pleased with any work experience in my life. Hobby Lobby hired me as a part-time seasonal cashier a few months ago. It's been the best time of my life. I interviewed for any position they had open, and was frankly dreading the idea of being a cashier since I had literally no experience in that line of work. However, I took the position when it was offered, and was SO relieved at how nice the CSM and managers were. They were patient and clear in their training, and I wasn't blamed and attacked for mistakes. I am a high achiever and always want to be perfect in everything I do, and am often very hard on myself, so it helps when my superiors shed a little grace on me. In addition to the cashier role I was hired for, I do all sorts of other forms of work in the store. I help unload the semi, unpack boxes, assemble furniture and lamps, stock shelves, dust, sweep, vacuum, condense inventory, assist customers, and keep an eye on store security. It's not a boring job in the least. I am greatly enjoying my time there, and am hoping to remain employed once my seasonal term expires. The pay is great, there are holiday bonuses, and the store treats employees to catered lunches/dinners now and again. My one and only complaint with the store is that they don't provide written manuals for cashiers. There is a great deal to remember, and it all has to be learned by word of mouth from the CSM while on the job. There is a binder with all the information at each register, but it cannot be removed for personal study, so I never get to read it. Since I am a very visual learner, it would help me a great deal to have a computer or written tutorial with all the register rules and procedures. Aside from that, I love my job and my company. Literally the best people and environment I've ever been in!

What I dislike about the company

The registers are antiquated, and there aren't enough take-home written training materials for cashiers. Other than that, I love everything about the company.
