People try to act supportive and encouraging but they are burnt out and distrustful and it shows.
Support from management
Managers will compel staff to work overtime for 16 hour days. They act for the most part as adversaries. It is rare to find a manager or scheduler who wants to help the staff
Due to the longstanding history of DCFS's presence watching over Hope institute and verifying that Abuse is not happening against the residents, the staff are watching their own backs. If one works well they will help out but mostly people aren't team minded
Freedom to work independently
If you are new expect to get the worst of the tasks. Unions protect their own. You will be mandated to work. You will be called in first.
Expect last minute changes. Expect to be moved to positions and homes that seniority staff don't want to work in. Communication exists as orders that cannot be refused without reprisal.
The seniority hierarchy rules. Granted the turnover is high but this does more to create turnover than to prevent it. An entry level trainee staff is given more to do and less rights than those who have been there for longer.
Attitude towards older colleagues
The fact that longer serving colleagues are supported and appreciated by the staff isn't necessarily a good mark. Management and state supervisors will throw them under the bus after praising them the week before
Internal promotions can happen but are rare
Overall compensation for your work
Benefits are decent. Overtime pay is guaranteed. However the cost to the reward ratio is not always worthwhile and the changes that happen do more to turn people away than the compensation does to keep them there
Office / Work Environment
Conditions mostly reflect the needs of the residents however they are also subject to the whims of the staff. One staff member thinks that a television is a right of the resident, another may think it's a waste of mental energy. Nothing is consistent. Lighting and sound is subject to the tolerance of residents as it should be, however this is also subject to change if a staff member decides that the resident should deal with it, regardless of the fact the residents have autism and cannot be held to the same degree of expectation as the staff
As a company, environmental and climate matters are a focus. Cleaning supplies are environmentally friendly. It is rare to see a recycling bin however.
It is a non profit institution for developmentally disabled so social matters are a concern. It is not a focus for most of the staff, however.
Awful. 16 hour days should be expected back to back. Labor laws prevent 3 days in a row, unless there are extenuating circumstances. This reviewer had not had this happen. However don't expect to get any weekends off or out of the mandates until you are higher up in seniority.
Only management speaks kindly of the company. And then only to the public.
This reviewer was employed for less than a year and nearly every quarter, the company promised there would be no layoffs followed by a surprise number of people being laid off. This reviewer is grateful for finding another job with greater security
Due to consistent inspections by the state, OSHA regulations were met. However injuries to the staff are always a possibility. Accidents can happen quickly. Staff are trained to de-escalate situations but if it cannot be prevented, there is not much to be done except to protect the residents.
If you want to work in this field, there is no challenging position than to work one on one with these residents. There is also no greater reward than this work when you make a connection and help the resident become his or her own advocate and help them make good life choices, the goal is to help them become self- reliant and it is possible.
The day to day tasks can overshadow this perspective however
Inclusive / Diverse
Diversity is present. But not as a focus.
Suggestions for improvement
- Re-evaluate the management. Treat it less like a prison. Seek to keep people on not to force them to work
What I like about the company
full time work and benefits. Guaranteed time and a half for overtime
What I dislike about the company
No rights as an individual employee unless it is earned through seniority
