Culture change is suppose to be occurring, but there is far too much resistance and lack of evidence of involvement from the top; middle management is forced to do it.
Support from management
Excuses are common practice instead of correcting the problems.
It's a free for all; either step on your peers or get stepped on by your peers.
Communication from leadership and across departments and shifts is horrible.
No degree = no promotion; it's an unwritten rule, but an all too common practice. Experience and knowledge of the industry is irrelevant. Sad truth that deserving people with great plant knowledge are passed up for promotions simply because they don't have a college degree.
Overall compensation for your work
Management is paid for each weekend worked or a day off. Working every weekend and getting paid for them is no offset for a poor work/life balance; employees are punished for there life choices in terms of health insurance charges
Office / Work Environment
Long hours and long work weeks.
Six days a week is routine, seven days is becoming more common to cover up maintenance failures.
Nearly impossible to get fired, even for falsification of documents or safety violations.
Injuries classified as catastrophic happen every year.
Getting through the day is the only challenge; you can do as little as you want or as much as you, your overall rating isn't affected either way, just your quality of life.
Suggestions for improvement
- Derail the excuse train and follow up with what you say you are going to do; don't just threatened people or say "we'll talk about it and investigate" and allow a hostile working environment to be an acceptable way of life.

It's a good paying job
What I dislike about the company
No work/life balance; pay is not equal to the work load; "required annual projects" are pointless and a waste of time; communication is poor; covering up persistent problems with excuses should not be acceptable; high stress positions are avoided by management and cause burnout and turnover routinely.
