Isolated, closed to outsiders. Lots of small-mindedness. Nepotism runs rampant.
Support from management
Middle-managers will throw you under the bus if they are threatened by anyone with more power, experience or influence.
Depending on your team, it can be good. But when your team that works well together has to work together with another team, forget about it.
Freedom to work independently
If you just do your job and do it well, for the most part, people will leave you alone.
The people at the top are in the know, but they hold that information from the rest of staff, which breeds a certain fear and uncertainty among most non-VP level staff.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Older faculty and staff are practically worshipped, even when common sense are long gone.
Some professional development is offered, sometimes you can take on special projects outside of your work to advance your career. But these things are up to you to figure out.
Office / Work Environment
Run down facilities for the most part. And a real lack of joy here.
This is one of the only perks of working at Houghton. You don't have to work long hours or on weekends. But the stress from the day will carry over in your mind after the work day is offer.
Considering that two of the main buildings on campus are historic and not retrofitted for handicapped access, I'd say not very good. But the newer buildings are fine.
Inclusive / Diverse
Mostly white, mostly very conservative Christians.
Suggestions for improvement
- Fire the entire incompetent management team, cut underperforming majors and programs. Stop hiring friends and family for jobs in which they are not qualified. Stop haphazardly throwing money at new programs and instead make what you already have better.
What I like about the company
Pretty campus grounds. A handful of good people.
What I dislike about the company
