  • I would require that ALL district level administrators and school administrators have a certain number of years of experience in the classroom before obtaining leadership positions. Experience makes a more effective leader.

What I like about the company

When I was a new employee, my fellow colleagues were a huge support. I was provided with the professional development I needed and loved the results that my progress and hard work on my students. Teaching is a very rewarding job, but a very difficult one. I would not recommend someone to teach if they do not have passion for it.

What I dislike about the company

The lack of financial support in the classroom. And sometimes discussions made by administration the hinders progress in the classroom.

Company Culture

Teachers are overloaded with responsibilities that take time away from preparing and delivering awesome lessons.

Support from management

This depends entirely on who the leadership is and who is assigned as your appraiser. In my experience, about 20% of the leadership staff is great and 20% are awful.

Teamwork

PLC time is often wasted with announcements and personal conversations that do not empower instruction. I once sat in a meeting where the Educational Specialist over the English Department used up 10 minutes to explain her husbands bypass operation in great graphic detail.

Internal Communication

Teachers are given mixed messages about the campus/district teaching priorities. They are also provided with too many curriculum options and teaching tools that a host of different people expect them to use.

Work-Life Balance

The district needs to hire staff who can take care of some of the responsibilities that are constantly dumped onto teachers. For example, when teachers administer benchmarks there should be someone else to process the data instead of having teachers pour over data for hours. You just end up with exhausted teachers. Teachers already have grading, lesson planning, materials development, copying, online posting of lessons, online monitoring of parent input, parent phone-calls, missing student work, regrading corrected student work, reteaching lessons students did not understand, seating charts and redoing seating charts and many other tasks that all take time.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Allow teachers to have more autonomy. There is far too much micromanagement. Campuses that aren't overly wealthy or overly poor get forgotten as far as monetary decisions are concerned. Our technology is also very dated.

What I like about the company

I work for a wonderful campus that has very involved parents. Many of the teachers have been at the campus for more than 10 years. These are things that can make a year easier. That being said, not all campuses are like mine. Many campuses are staffed with brand new teachers year after year rather than retaining veteran teachers who can help provide guidance. I have been blessed.

What I dislike about the company

Wasteful spending and inequity. There is also not much consistency across the district or even smaller areas. But that can be quite difficult with such a large district. It is also way too top-heavy and there is very little autonomy anymore.
