It's a good company on a corporate level but individual store managers aren't trained well, lots of turn over, hard to get consistent hours and if you're not a favourite or butt kisser they make your life hell.
Support from management
Rarely do you hear praise. To promote you pretty much have to stab others in the back.
Freedom to work independently
They make you believe you can work independently but then they micromanage you to death. Work is never good enough.
Lacking in a large degree. Seldom had praise for what you are doing well but plenty of complaints for what you need help with or were lacking in.
Not a lot of women and minorities in management positions. All the store managers are men except in 2 stores. They treat women like they are only good managers in departments like bakery or deli. Rarely ever see women in meat department, produce or grocery department especially in a management position.
Attitude towards older colleagues
It's difficult to progress in this company unless you're young and a man. The job is physical and they make it impossible for older individuals to start there. Most of the older managers started when they were young and took years to progress up the ladder. An older person would hardly have the opportunity or stamina to do that.
Make much more money and have better opportunities for growth
Overall compensation for your work
Office / Work Environment
It was acceptable. Not great but not bad. No real employee lounge for staff to relax or be comfortable in.
They separate cardboard from trash
Difficult to get scheduled to work around your family and home life. Hours can be scarce and they complain if you request certain days off.
Much better than Hyvee. I feel appreciated.
I work with school districts so I'm pretty secure.
They have the bare basics required by law.
Had to do all daily cash deposit and reconciliations. Responsible for AR/AP, invoices, expenses. Department managers difficult to work with, failed to turn in paperwork in timely manner and no support from store manager
Inclusive / Diverse
Store manages and department managers are divas. If you have good ideas or opinions they steal them and credit themselves or they feel threatened by you and are afraid you're trying to steal their job.
Suggestions for improvement
- Hire more diverse people for management roles. Make raises and promotions merit based.Hold Store managers accountable not only for profit but employee turnover.
What I like about the company
I made a few good friends who were trying to contribute and progress. We learned to have each others back and supported each other.
What I dislike about the company
Management needs better human resource skills training. They need to learn to motivate people without being jerks.
