Misogynistic and racist. Out of 60+ Store Directors 6 are women and just 1 is a person of color. I was harassed at work by a customer and nothing was done.
Support from management
The hourly part time employees work well together, but management is lazy and in it for themselves.
Freedom to work independently
Not an option.
We find out what’s going on by guessing, innuendo and gossip. There is no stable chain of communication from management. Nobody seems to care what happens to us.
Big problem here. There are very few females in management.
Attitude towards older colleagues
One of my older supervisors refuses to help me look things up on the computer, not sure if it’s because he doesn’t know how or because he doesn’t want to? Management was notified and there’s been no discernible change.
Non-existent for anyone who isn’t a white guy with a beer belly & short hair from Iowa who votes for people like Donald Trump. Our CEO could possibly star on My 600 LB Life!
Overall compensation for your work
Almost every other grocery store chain in town pays more. Aldi starts shelf stickers at $13.10 and Sprouts & CVS at least $12.50, Costco even more! Plus ALL the other chains pay time and a half on holidays! Not Hy-Vee!! Yet they can afford to pay Store Directors 6 figures?? Seems quite unfair! And the quarterly bonuses for hourly folks is a total joke!!
They need to get in step with what the market & competitors are paying....the low wages contribute to hiring less than qualified people which creates higher turnover which costs more money in the long run! Like duh!?? Economics 101!!
Office / Work Environment
There’s a couple people who sit all day and boss the rest of us.
We create tons of trash...cardboard and plastic yet it all goes into same bin! Should be sorted for recycling.
They make you work holidays without extra pay.
They pretend they are employee owned, but don’t you think that employees had a vote that they would want time and a half for holidays??? Just like every other chain in town? The bonus is a total joke! Keep those pennies! We want pay now!!!
Its a less than desirable job so turnover is high.
They permit customers to bring guns in the store. Conceal & carry. They turn a blind eye towards customers harassing employees. There is zero safety or security training. Its just whatever...good luck if a tornado comes or if someone comes in with a gun and you get robbed!!
I’m good at my job because I study my product line outside the store and when I’m off. Because it is one of my passions.

- Pay higher hourly wages! Pay time and a half on holidays!
What I like about the company
The other employees are fun, and most of the employees. I enjoy teaching people about my product line and learning more through tasting.
What I dislike about the company
Misogyny & Racism as evidenced by their poor track record of promoting women & minorities to management. Pretty sure they pay white men more to start.
Customers believe that we’re treated so well because of that “employee owned” koolaid and were treated worse and paid less than practically any other store!!
Extremely cheap and insulting Christmas party at a bowling alley! They served Hy-Vee pizza and you had to buy your own drinks!!! Some treat!! I think we all would’ve been happier going home with a glazed ham!
