There is no clear path for advancement in most areas. Some departments promote from within, most hire from outside. One of the main reasons I will leave.
Overall compensation for your work
Decent benefits from the state. Health isn't great, but better than many. Pay is below industry averages and you can forget about pay raises other than the annual 2-4% cost of living.
This is probably the best part about working here. They are pretty flexible about time and it is a 37.5 hr week. Isn't much expectation to work over 40 very often.
Depends on the department. Some administrative areas are high turn over, some of the educational and exhibition areas never turn over.
Suggestions for improvement
- Find a way to keep talented employees.
What I like about the company
It has a nice work/life balance. It is a fantastic building and place to work. There are a lot of really cool events and programs you can experience that you can't at other employers. It is generally really good professional experience.
What I dislike about the company
There is no opportunity for a raise. Very little to no opportunity for advancement. This means that if you want to increase your pay or title, there is no opportunity for that. If you just want a stable comfortable job with the same pay and same responsibilities that's fine, but for people wanting to improve their career you have to leave. Leadership is aware of this and makes not efforts to work around it. They blame it on the State and ignore it. Leadership is very disjointed. This changes as leadership changes, but at the moment there is no clear head and it makes navigation difficult.
