- Jacobs Engineering Group Inc.26.Dec 2018
I started at J. E. Sirrine Company on March 2, 1973. Employee Owned - excellent company, bought by CRS - traded on open stock market - somewhat less than Sirrine - bought by Jacobs - traded on open stock market - much better until Jacobs bought CH2M in December 2017 and Jacobs replaced upper management in Greenville, SC by CH2M management in March 2018 and new mgmt laid off many Jacobs older employees and I was one. 2 years before full retirement and now NO insurance. Stellar appraisals and even worked overtime the day before being laid off. So very wrong. No warning.....reported in on Monday and was told to go home - work force reduction. We were very busy. Kept CH2M employees not original Jacobs employees in my department and for the most part over the entire office.
Support from management
Above your immediate department manager, the support STOPS!
Prior to 2016 when Jacobs executive management changed, teamwork was excellent. After new executive management and with CH2M purchase, teamwork was lost - it became a dictatorship
Freedom to work independently
At one time but I think that is changing with new regime.
Immediate department communication was great, outside of that, there was almost no real communication.
As equal as an Engineering and Construction firm is with female employees - much better than the 70's but still has a long way to go.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Laid off at age 63 after 45 years service with no notice and kept younger employees and new employees from newly bought CH2M and I had stellar appraisals and sacrificed and worked overtime and gave more than 100% and loved my job and internal and external clients respected me and appreciated my loyalty, communication, problem solving, dedication, knowledge, leadership, management & training qualities.
For younger personnel. No training except on your own time. Lunch & Learns, bring your own lunch, no compensation. Expected to give your own time to work on new programs, train, etc.
Overall compensation for your work
Compensation has always been great until recent lay-off in a discriminating age position. (After 45 years of service)
Expectations in estimating requires that the work-life balance is not equal because we are trying to get work for the rest of the company and deadlines can't be missed or you miss an opportunity for new work. Nature of the business.
Fortune 500 - very well respected in our industry - new leadership has caused a decline in our client's image of Jacobs in some offices.
I always thought it was great and secure until I lost my job after 45 years with new management and before retirement age and no insurance now.
Safety is "Beyond Zero" concept. Excellent ratings - not so good if it involves lighting in parking lot for late night workers, etc., left up to landlord. No money out of pocket for safety or anything else if it does not fall under Jacobs standard operating procedures.
Enjoyed my job and was very happy for 45 years. Then totally devastated.
Inclusive / Diverse
Workshare with India, Mexico, and diverse cultures are growing and seemed to be accepted much better than age.
