Feels good for a couple years and then reality sets in
Support from management
Supervisors will evaluate you on what you are doing right and not what you are doing wrong. Some of them will not back you up when there is a problem and will yield to certain students' requests but not others.
Freedom to work independently
The workload is heavy in one office but most others can close during the day at their convenience
Although employees are given the opportunity for additional training, not everyone can take advantage of all classes if they conflict with the employees work schedule
Overall compensation for your work
Wages and salaries are about one third less than what one would get at a regular business. Health benefits are competitive.
Office / Work Environment
The buildings are comfortable and computer hardware and software is updated regularly.
The campus tries to recycle some of its paper, however it depends on which department you are in.
All administrators are very accommodating to employees and their families and are given a generous amount of vacation each year
Employees do not talk fondly of the "company" as a whole and complain about the delays in making decisions that affect everyone
There is very little risk of being eliminated on the basis of restructuring. Once you are hired, if you do your job, you will be employed or they will find you another area to work in if your department doesn't need you.
Our campus has elevators in every building, however, handicapped parking is non-existent. The closest handicapped parking is in the parking structure 1 block down the street.
Dealing with the public is challenging and one does not always get positive feedback. Office work is not challenging for anyone with a working knowledge of common office software.
Inclusive / Diverse
The campus is comprised of a very diverse group of employees and students
Suggestions for improvement
- Human Resource personnel need to know every aspect of each employees responsibilities. Department heads should be given more autonomy to make decisions with out having to wait for every decision to go to higher levels in the administration
What I like about the company
I like the location of the campus downtown, the programs that they offer are helpful and most co-workers are friendly.
What I dislike about the company
I don't like it when an employee enforces a rule with a student, the student complains to the employee's supervisor and the student is allowed to break the rule or entire policies are changed because one student complains.
The administration is to slow to hire employees and make decisions about policies.
