Terrified of lawsuits leads to inaction on anything from aggressive reporting to disciplining ineffective workers.
Support from management
Leadership? They call it "management." We call it herding the sheep.
Great co-workers, for the most part. But it's a constant battle with "managers" who seek to cut costs to the point of negatively affecting the product.
Freedom to work independently
Heavily management-driven newsroom and other departments. Lip-service is given to "initiative." It's not allowed.
Heck, we've had people DIE and no one puts out a memo.
Office / Work Environment
They are respectful of working hours and days, as much as anyone can be in this business. Health benefits are very good and affordable.
Only at the corporate level. Not even close locally.
Again, respectful of hours and not abusive, for the most part. It will happen occasionally, but not often.
If you can read a newspaper and rip off a story, you can be a reporter here. The biggest "challenge" is producing a newscast with broken, out of date equipment.
Inclusive / Diverse
Yes, but not for the right reasons. Only to avoid a lawsuit.
Suggestions for improvement
- Spend some money on equipment.
What I like about the company
Nice, if less-than-stellar co-workers. Pleasant people to work with.
What I dislike about the company
The attitude that we are in a dying business and just biding our time.
