Company Culture

By culture do you mean our past our present or our future? If you mean past it is a family feeling, currently I am beginning to think that there are little clicks that get together and it will all depend on who you kiss up to in order to get ahead

Support from management

When there is a problem or a question about my classes there is support available and the department chair is great for providing guidance.

Teamwork

nope, usually independant of each other.

Freedom to work independently

Good connections and feed back for jobs well done

Internal Communication

email is good, often too much information provided

Gender Equality

They need to reward employees better, those that have been there the longest as a part time employee should be offered full time positions

Attitude towards older colleagues

yes, age is not a factor that I have noticed

Career Development

No, they do not like to offer the 'full time position to current part-time employees before they start looking elsewhere for a new hire

Overall compensation for your work

Just got my first raise in 10 years

Office / Work Environment

Some places could have more comfortable chairs to sit in

Environmental Friendliness

they have recycle bins set up, not that they are used that often

Work-Life Balance

can work when needed, get paid for all hours and stay home in pajamas when needed

Company Image

They could offer more rewards.

Job Security

There will always be students that need help and candidates for the classes that I teach

Handicapped Accessibility

yes, improvemnts have recently ben implemented

Workplace Safety

There is security available even though they do not do their jobs completely by not enforcing that students do not park in instructor areas

Challenging Work

How hard is it to stand in front of a class room full of strangers 3 times a year and tell them what they should know. Also when helping others you simply guide them on putting to use what they already know.

Inclusive / Diverse

They like to hear the diverse thoughts but will not take them into account if it does not agree with the mission statement

Suggestions for improvement

  • It feels like student workers are occasionally hired, not for their experience, but for their (minority) heritage. This has happened in several areas, and it is not intentional, but it does make other students not want to even apply for student jobs because they know that they will not even qualify because they are of a non-minority race.Offer more benefits to 'contract' employees, examples could include medical benefits, paid holidays for part time employees, discounts at the cafeteria for part time employees -

What I like about the company

As a support staff, part time, your hours are usually yours to pick and choose at the beginning of a semester. As an instructor you get to set the class up the way you choose, you just have to cover a certain amount of information. Taining for current software is available, often with classes set up to be able to learn in a group setting.

What I dislike about the company

The only part that I disapprove of is their hiring/rewarding of current employees. Employees that have been there for 5-20 years are not first in line when a new opening in the department becomes available. It will automatically be posted 'internally' -for full time employees- then externally for everyone to apply for. The general rewards and recognition for long standing employees is almost non-existant, occasionally you hear of a part-time employee being offered a perk (example, parking spot), but not often. When I first started teaching there were reward dinners or banquets, and pre-semester training sessions that part-timers, and adjuncts, were encouraged to attend, but that has not happened for a couple of years. There have been times that a part-time employee has been working their hardest for a full-time position and they still get passed up, the job is offered to someone outside the company that only stays 2 years or so and then the company is right back to where they were before. If they had 'promoted' the part-time, loyal, employee they probably would not need to go through the hiring search again. Security could do a better job on making sure that students are the only cars parked in employee spaces. Security could make themselves more visible during the open hours of operation.

What I like about the company

My boss was a great lady and a wonderful person to work for. They prepared my work station with the appropriate work for the day and the next day for when I got done with my classes.

What I dislike about the company

It did not really challenge me enough for an outside job and did not give me enough experience I needed to find a job outside of the college.
