Management says applicants need to 'fit' the mold and company culture....but no one really knows what that culture is. It's not spelled out and I guess if they don't like an applicant, they just use the excuse that they don't fit in with the company culture.
Support from management
There is no support. I emailed the owner to ask for help because my newest boss was harassing me. I tried to talk to the boss several times, but nothing changed so I went higher up. So, the owner spoke to the new boss, but instead of helping me and making the behavior stop, they Fired ME. The reason? They said I was 'tardy' from lunch too many times. Here is the truth: I had been told there would be no more overtime approved and the boss before this one had asked me to either leave earlier or take a longer lunch if I knew that I was getting close to hitting my 40 hrs. for the week. So, I was taking longer lunches, so I wouldn't get overtime. My new boss was there and I let him know each time I would be taking a longer lunch and he had no problem with that. I had just been told by another Manager the week before that my performance was great and senior management was noticing. My attendance was perfect. I did everything I was told. I was always respectful and did my job exceptionally well. In fact, I had just been notified that my only son had past away at 30 yrs. old. I took the customary 3 days off. On the 2nd day back, they fired me. Heartless Company!
Nope, people are stomping on others trying to get ahead, but there is nowhere to go, especially for administrative department. There is no higher level for any position. It is a cutthroat atmosphere and there is no honor. He owner is nice, but he is led astray by other managers who lie and manipulate him, and the lower employees suffer from these abusive and bullying managers. The owner does not see the 'true' side to the Administrative Manager or the HR Manager, but are heartless, ruthless, and are running that company....and its reputation...into the ground.
Freedom to work independently
No, constant micromanaging. The (Admin. Mgr.) does not allow you to do things any other way, except for HER way. It doesn't matter that the end result will be the same either way! This person also goes into any dept. she pleases and pokes other administrative personnel (especially those who do not report to her) and harrasses them. She is a different person in front of the owner.
I reported to 5 different bosses in 3 year's time. Although, I mostly did work for one person, which was really difficult because he would dump a mountain of paperwork on my desk, then he would leave and be unavailable when questions came up. He was awful at trying to explain things, which made it incredibly frustrating. Also, this person's favorite saying to me was regarding this raise I was going to get for tripling my workload, not to mention all the special projects to help him meet his quotas to put serious Bonus $$ in HIS pocket. Plus, no matter how much work I took on, how many compliments I got, how many nights my car was the last one in the parking lot.... when my review came, I not only did NOT get a raise, but I also got low marks. It didn't make sense and did not accurately reflect my performance for the prior year. The HR and Admin Managers did not like me and blocked my raise every review. My boss finally went to the Owner and requested a raise for me in the middle of the year without HR or Admin Manager's input. This time I did get a good raise, but the office politics is too much to bear. Too many games.
No way. This place does not promote or reward women. There is a very thick glass ceiling and women will never break through it, of that I was certain and it didn't take long to figure that out.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Not good. No respect.
None. They talk about training, but refuse to shell out the money to make it happen. Very greedy and that is why they pay under-market.
Overall compensation for your work
This is not a company that understands the concept that when you give an employee a significant amount of work to do, over and above her normal assignments, that almost every other business raises their salary to compensate for the additional workload. I did the work of 3-4 people, yet for the first 2 years of it, was denied raises for ridiculous accusations that were not even accurate! How can the Admin Mgr. and HR Mgr. rate my performance when I barely saw either of them during the year?! It was totally unfair and my boss was incapable of standing up for me for fear of losing his own job. (he actually said this to me, after he apologized over and over and told me not to change a thing, that I was doing a great job!). Unbelievable!
Office / Work Environment
crowded and dirty. Hundreds of crickets inside the office, air vents, walls, etc. during August, September, October, and November. They give to glue strips that really stink to put around you desk and office area. The dead crickets stink so bad that it is really difficult to work in that environment. I have no idea how I put up with it for 3 years! The rest of the year, you can count on cockroaches roaming the halls freely.
Okay, I guess but if you don't give them a 14-day notice prior to taking a day off, then it counts against you and you are not allowed to participate in a monthly $50 drawing. They used to give employees with perfect performance a $50 bonus every month. This was GREAT and really helped pay for gas and other stuff. They did away with that a few years ago and really hurt the admins because after paying exorbitant costs for medical insurance ($600 per month for TWO people!), taxes, etc. there was barely anything left. Most employees could not even afford the high doctor copays, so they didn't even use the insurance they were forced to take.
I was fired over a lie the new boss told the owner to save his own job.
Work was very challenging, but no one ever appreciates it or compensates you for it. It got to where I didn't even want to attend meetings any more because every meeting I walked away with another set of responsibilities (with no added pay).
Inclusive / Diverse
I was the only white person in my department and the new manager excluded me from all meetings, emails, discussions, etc. from day one. Because I was not the same race as the rest of the department I was left out in the cold, literally.
