Suggestions for improvement
- More respectful and constructive criticism and communication to employees from management. Better communication between corporation and the retail stores. Taking more time to talk about safety. Taking more time to invest in proper training instead of just throwing people on the floor and expecting them to pick things up in no time, especially with complicated things like baking and working certain equipment.
What I like about the company
The company culture was very Southern hospitality, and valued teamwork and a good work ethic, which meshed well with my personal attitudes. I had plenty of opportunities to learn new things/skills and within a month I had a regional manager talking about moving me into a supervisor position where I ended up making pretty decent money. However, I got stuck working a grab-bag of three different shifts that wrecked my body's internal clock and really damaged my sleep schedule and my health to a certain extent.
I liked all my coworkers and we had a great team. It was not only a retail store but also provided goods for the wholesale market, so there was always plenty to do and it could get insanely stressful, but nothing I could handle as I had plenty of years experience in retail. Honestly, it was pretty fun a lot of the time.
Unfortunately, the general manager was kind of a nightmare. You never knew what you were going to get from her on a day to day basis, and she could be unreasonable in her behavior, especially toward lower management. Like, to the degree that teetered on bullying. Really unacceptable, unprofessional, and counterproductive behavior that drove a lot of people away. Including me, in the end. Would still be working there if not for her. Just wasn't worth it the undue stress.
What I dislike about the company
Upper management needs to be made more accountable for their treatment of other employees. I've never seen a turnover rate in any other place I worked at. I was there for only a year or so, and I saw so many people come and go, and a large number of them left because of upper management not knowing how to talk constructively and civilly to employees.
I also wish communication was better within the company. The number of times I came into work and it was sprung on us, oh, yeah, corporate says we have to do this, that, or the other, and we're completely clueless as to what exactly this, that, or the other entails, leaving us to deal new software that doesn't work, new promos we were unprepared for, sales that no one in the store had any clue about. Very silly.
