People who work here are great and easy going.
Support from management
Management was very immature and considered anyone who disagreed with their decisions as being "negative" and completely ignored experience and education to go with how they "felt" at that moment. This changed daily, and sometimes hourly.
Because of micro-managing there was no real teamwork.
Freedom to work independently
You could work independently all you wanted; however, the direction was always the way the management wanted to go, even if it went against physics.
Would spend considerable time on a design, only to find out management decided to go another direction, usually their own idea, and had someone else in the department work on it. So much waste.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Older colleagues were considered to have "bad habits" and be "negative." Most other companies would view this as having "experience" and being "realistic."
I wasted 4 years of my life at this company. I met resistance at every turn when trying to use good engineering practices or by trying to layout a plan to develop a product. I feel as if I am a worse engineer now, than I was when I first graduated. To constantly be mocked and belittled and ostracized for trying to manage the complete chaos of the R&D environment was frustrating and disheartening.
Overall compensation for your work
I took a severe pay cut and lost insurance and 401K to starting working for Küat. I did this because I believed the company had a good future and was willing to take the risk.
It was not require that you work more than needed in a week, but it was made very clear it was enthusiastically encouraged to work on the weekends or your own time.
Küat, as a company, has a very good image with its customers. As it should, even though I disagreed a lot with the company's "shoot from the hip" product development style, he made sure to never produce a product he felt a customer would have a bad experience with.
I was let go for doing exactly what I was told I was hired to do. I never had a bad review the entire time I worked there. In fact, they were stellar reviews. However, because I was viewed as being unhappy (this was an assumption, I was never even asked about my state of mind on working there) I was let go. No warning. No discussion. No indication anything was wrong.
If OSHA ever visited this place they would shut it down immediately. I was always mocked for trying to be safe and make sure myself or someone else was not injured.
The only challenging work was dealing with the constant state of emergency every single new product development was in. It became a standing joke to see "ASAP" in emails from management.
Suggestions for improvement
- The company makes money despite itself. They will eventually grow big enough that their complete lack of defined processes is going to hurt them. I was told they realized they needed someone like me because they did not have the experience or education I did. The biggest thing they could do for improvement is something I can not put directly in this review because it is not allowed to call someone out specifically. That company is successful because of one person, but it is ultimately going to fail because of the same person once they get big enough. It is all well and good when a company is just starting out and has very few employees and products, to make gut decisions and be completely reactionary, but at some point you have to start planning and managing resources.
What I like about the company
The company is committed to giving their customers good products.
What I dislike about the company
I was lied to during the interviewing process, and I was continued to be lied to by management and what they wanted from me. I was told several time they appreciated my honesty and dedication to trying to improve things there. Then I was let go because I was viewed as being unhappy. I was viewed as being unhappy because I kept arguing we needed to plan out a product's development so we could manage resources and be prepared at each stage of development. I was told in reviews I needed to keep pushing for them to get better, but then because NOTHING was actually changing I was getting frustrated and they did not like my negative or unhappy "vibe."
