This would have to be the most thankless, underpaying jobs that I've ever had. You aren't acknowledged for going above and beyond in your department, there are no confidential meetings to discuss concerns and the "open door" policy doesn't exist. Any concern that you go to management about is not addressed and, usually, by the end of your shift, everyone in the building will have heard what you had the confidential meeting about.
Support from management
My supervisor was more concerned with her personal life and watching YouTube videos more than she was concerned about providing activities and caring about the residents/employees. Also, the administrator is extremely unprofessional, doesn't follow center policies or the policies put in place by the state in certain areas.
A LOT of drama and stress. If there is no one available/willing to help you, the department supervisor is supposed to offer help, but was usually nowhere to be found or couldn't be contacted by phone.
Freedom to work independently
No, the workload is NOT fairly distributed and the employees have absolutely no say in the structuring of their own area of responsibility.
There is no real communication.
Unless you know someone in an administrative position, you will get paid less than someone who is friends/related. You will not receive any recognition for your hard work, yearly anniversaries or anything that you have done different to break up the monotony for the residents.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Older people have been hired, but most have left due to the job not paying enough for the duties that are required.
There is no advancement opportunities in place. Someone would have to retire and they would still hire someone off of the street to fill an opening.
Overall compensation for your work
The wage is WAY BELOW NORMAL for the responsibilities of the job.
Office / Work Environment
A handful of rooms are very nice, but the majority of the rooms aren't. There's no real ventilation because the windows don't open. Also, the cleaning supplies are strongly scented. With no real ventilation, it can be hard to breathe.
There is no work/family balance. You work rotating shifts, no questions. Rotating shifts have been proven to affect the employees physical and mental well being because of the disruption of the employees sleep/wake cycle.
No. Most people who are working there are just happy to have a job, though they feel that they deserve, and are educated, for much better.
The turnover rate at this employer is ridiculously high. An entire shift can have a job one day, only to find out that they are unemployed the next.
There's nothing to accomplish, you serve food in the dining room, hand out coffee 2X per day and try to keep the residents entertained. You also perform room visits for the extremely sick, most of the time, they nicely ask you to leave them alone.
Inclusive / Diverse
No. There's no diversity, opinions and ideas usually fall on deaf ears.
Suggestions for improvement
- This company would need a complete overhaul from the owner all the way down to department management to possibly become a good company to work for.
What I like about the company
What I dislike about the company
It's not what you know, but who you know. If you don't know the right person, there's no job security.
