Outwardly the culture appears comfortable, however, people dread the micromanagement of every detail of their day.
Support from management
The executive management micro manages every decision made by department staff, making it almost impossible to meet timelines and achieve goals. While they say there is transparency in management, there is none. Tactical strategies are changed on a dime with no explanation. There is significant turnover in management resulting in inconsistency in messaging and expectations.
While individuals are decent to work with, there is a lot of politically motivated self preservation, resulting in poor morale.
Freedom to work independently
When your manager is incapable of delegating the appropriate responsibilities to a member of their staff, and secretive about the department and its goals, it is very difficult to excel in your given area of expertise.
For a company employing less than 60 people, there is an inordinate amount of process related tasks that waste time and resources.
No criteria for professional advancement was offered or suggested. When asked about continued education, the answer was "no."
Overall compensation for your work
Compensation was fair.
With their PTO structure you must be extremely careful not to go over your allotted time. Families are NOT taken into consideration and you are expected to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the event your skills or knowledge is required. This includes holidays, bereavement, family emergencies and health related issues such as doctor appointments.
People are frustrated with the direction of the company and the lack of new product development taking place within the company's core competency. Outside of the company, but within the industry, the company has a poor reputation.
With all of the turnover in management and the fact that the sales and distribution model has changed repeatedly, positions are eliminated regularly and re-hired under different titles.
If you were allowed to do the job you were hired for without being questioned at every turn the work would be much more challenging and rewarding.
Suggestions for improvement
- Allow the people hired for a particular job to do that job. Minimize the amount of micromanagement. Stick to a decision once it has been made. Reduce the amount of processes for ordinary tasks. Recognize that the organization is small and does not need to behave as if it is a large company. Once committed to an idea, stick to it. Value employees as people, with families, lives and interests outside of work.
What I like about the company
The industry that the company and its product support.
What I dislike about the company
Managers do not use their roles to shape, guide or mentor their staff. Nothing is transparent. Goals are changed without communication. Honesty is not part of the culture.
