You don't expect companies to still have such strong good ole boy cultures but, it's alive and well at Laureate.
Support from management
Top management has no idea what is going on. Managers are only interested in keeping their own jobs and if they think anyone below them is a threat to their existence, you're outta there.
No such thing. You are on your own here.
Freedom to work independently
Many people feel set up to fail because you are so independent and ignored until something is wrong. It's a weird place....
Nobody tells you anything until they start completely ignoring you and then suddenly you are shown the door. I've seen many really good people go for no reason. They enjoy hiring and letting go on a regular basis.
Again, it's a good ole boy network. The people that get promoted or paid well (which has nothing to do with performance) are those that are friends with the executives.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Sent to pasture regularly.
Little to no development. Again, you are on your own.
Overall compensation for your work
They pay market and below with the exception of the Executives and their friends.
Office / Work Environment
Not much exists. You will work tirelessly for very little in return. I love hard work but, it's also nice to have a thank you now and then. And they could care less if you never enjoy another weekend again. LOL
A lot of people think this company is a pyramid scheme.
There is no security and that vibe is always present.
There are plenty of handicap accessible parking spaces, etc.
I suppose it's as safe as a building can be.
The work is plentiful. The challenging part is just keeping your job.
Inclusive / Diverse
This is a pretty diverse company but it has to be. It's an international company. There are some good people here that are not in management but if you're not with the "in" crowd you are ignored.
Suggestions for improvement
- The senior general counsel there is a mean old man whose title should be Chief Gossip of the company. He loves to keep the boat rocked and everything unbalanced. The negative culture starts at the top and he will smile while backstabbing everyone. It's my understanding he has been there almost as long as the CEO and has set this tone for decades. The executive floor is a miserable and cut throat environment and this trickles down into the entire company.
What I like about the company
The location is nice.
What I dislike about the company
I dislike the company culture. Very cut throat. It's also difficult (traffic and the location near harbor) and parking is very expensive. Not worth it.
