I dislike about the employer

Tier One, a tutoring company, does not deal honestly with those it employs.

1. In its contracts with students & tutors, Tier One warns that it will charge students for sessions they schedule--whether they show up or not--unless the student contacts the tutor to reschedule or cancel at least 12 hours in advance. In reality, Tier One pressures tutors to let students reschedule sessions at the last minute (without even an excuse), & not to charge students who schedule sessions then don’t show up. Tier One drops tutors who insist on adhering to their contracts.

2. Tier One’s contracts claim that Tier One has an independent-contractor relationship with its tutors. In reality, its staff micromanages tutors on such details as how to communicate with students (email vs. mobile telephone vs. landline telephone).

3. Tier One’s staff resists even discussing with tutors the meaning of ambiguous terms in its contracts with them. Staff insists that any interpretation other than its own is “unreasonable.” Worse, Tier One’s staff uses words contrary to their ordinary meanings, such as using the word “all” to mean “not all but most, with significant exceptions.”
