Suggestions for improvement

  • Figure out a great grant that would fund more employees so we could help more people who really need us.

What I like about the company

Legal Aid helps so many low income or otherwise marginalized people with complicated civil legal issues. We care about our clients, and because our services are free to our clients we never have to worry about billable hours and can just do the work that is needed. Our attorneys and support staff help to get people who otherwise wouldn't really have a prayer of navigating the legal system the help and equal justice they deserve in court.

What I dislike about the company

As is usual with non-profit organizations, there is perpetually too much work and not enough staff to go around and handle it all. They do the best they can with what they have to work with. It is worthwhile to stick it out if you care at all about helping people who really need your expertise.

Suggestions for improvement

  • The best thing we could/can do is to keep searching for and winning new grants to fund the important work that we do. I was on the staff appreciation committee and those tiny budget office functions helped everyone feel appreciated and happy so it was my joy to do that, I would encourage more of those little breaks in the day. Given the high-stress factor of our jobs, it is very nice to know that the attorneys and management get it and are glad we're there plugging away.

What I like about the company

I learned literally everything I know about being a paralegal during my 17.5 years at LASMT&C. I also learned how much difference you can make in someone's life. I learned so much from my mentors, the attorneys and also from our clients. I loved everything about my job (except the commute and being constantly overworked and understaffed!) Working at t non-profit is a world apart from working at a for-profit law firm. The focus was truly and only on helping our clients, we never had to worry about billable hours.

What I dislike about the company

Our office was perpetually understaffed such that we were overworked constantly. The pay scale was poor as well. We always had too much work and not enough staff to handle it all. But it was a non-profit and it wasn't like we could go out and snag a major account or high-paying client, that's not what we did so it followed that we had to be extremely dedicated and do the best we could with what limited resources we had available.
