We would hear about deadlines and given compliments on successful work, but nothing about company profits vs workers pay.
Employees who are tight with management are given preferential treatment
Attitude towards older colleagues
Certain people who were tight with management were given favorable treatment. Some employees had a personal relationship with management outside of work or knew the owners before being hired. They were the in crowd and usually were given preferential treatment and were in on the company gossip.
The owners asked employees if they wanted to further tg heir job knowledge sometimes offering to pay for classes.
Overall compensation for your work
The company payed a lower than expected wage upon initial hire. After working there for three months and having a huge amount of extra duties and responsibilities added to my job requirements I asked and received a pay raise. But, then my weekly hours went from 40-50 down to about 25-30. There was also a job where we were promised a bonus upon completion, but we're not paid for almost 5 months later. It was also much smaller than expected. I was told by management at one point that they were considering giving 2 employees an xbox in liew of a raise or a 40 hour work week. I felt insulted by that thought and offer. Benefits are offered. Nothing special except the company contributed 401.
Office / Work Environment
Extreme physical working conditions as an environmental tech and CDL driver. Frequently required to wear respirators and chemical suits. Dealing with caustic chemicals, human fecal waste, removing dead animals and working at extreme heights and confined spaces with poisonous and oxygen displacing gasses in extremely hot temperatures.
I can say that being a small family busInes the owners are pretty lenient if you have personal matters to attend. They were usually able to allow time off or reschedule jobs or assign another employee to a task.
Being a small family company they frequently use other friends or family members to help on jobs or cut employee overtime. You can expect that they will always lookout for familh members and personal friends over the common employee. Favoritism in the workplace is common and thete is little job security for anyone outside the circle of family or friends.
The company takes safety extremely serious and is a priority. Although working in the field as an environmental tech can be extremely dangetous, I always felt all safety measures were taken and all safety equipment was provided. If we felt uncomfortable or saw something dangerous we could stop and reevaluate the conditions.
Suggestions for improvement
- Give employees a guaranteed 40 hour work salary. Extra pay or bonus pay for requiring employees to be on call. Union scale wages would be a good idea also.
What I like about the company
Flexible schedule. Management was easy to get along with. Nice employees at the time I worked there. Good equipment to use.
What I dislike about the company
Favortism. Also if management didn't have any jobs scheduled thete was no work...sometimes you were given charity work such as pushing a broom or washing trucks to earn a few hours. Work was sporadic. Sometimes 60 hours a week, sometimes barely getting 20. The constant on call and mandatory emergency response status was annoying and stressful. I would constantly get called on weekends and in the wee hours of the morning like 1 :30 A.M. for a job. Sometimes for something very simple that could wait and only took an hour or so. There was also no bonus or extra pay for sacrificing your personal life and freeyime.
