Career Development

Although in the past lowes would be a good place to make a career with the recent re-structure of the company there are far fewer positions worth making a career in the company open, and if you begin to make more than what others make do not expect to be promoted in fact expect to be fired because you make 'too much'.

Overall Compensation for your work

The company essentially gives pay raises out equally based on position without concern for how hard or valuable that associate is.

Job security

The company has fired many people simply for changing the structure of the company without offering them another position despite some of these employees working for Lowes for Decades.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Begin to view your employees as "your people" take care of them.

What I like about the company

They have flexible hours and work with your scheduling, so this makes a good job if you have many other responsibilities.

What I dislike about the company

They do not value their employees and treat them like a number.

Company culture

Awful. We were all lied-to about layoffs and they put a spin on potential layoffs. Our Store Management are nothing but gutless, back-stabbing cowards. That's the way they get promoted.

Support from Management

Sarcasm runs rampant from Management. Over-inflated egos. They brag A LOT about themselves.

Teamwork

No - Never. There;s never enough people on the floor to help customers, and management knows it, but they want their bonuses so they don't care. Management will bark-out orders over the Intercom when they can just as easily fix the problem themselves. For example, a Manager will walk past long lines of customers at the registers and instead of opening a register immediately, they'll page a "Code 3" and continue to walk by. In other words "Do as I say, not as I do".

Communication

Can't believe a word they say. They lie a lot.

Gender Equality

Few minorities in Management.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Terrible. The worst. Older, more educated and experienced associates being passed-up on promotions. Clearly a violation of their Civil Rights.

Career Development

If you're young, shmooz-up to Management and back-stab colleagues you can get ahead. Management is egotistical and insecure.

Overall Compensation for your work

Better than some places, but health insurance is terrible.

Office/Work Environment

Terrible. So many people have to pretend that they like the Managers because that's the only way they think they can survive and get ahead. Pathetic.

Eco-consciousness

They go through so much paper it's ridiculous.

Work-Life Balance

A lot of times you'll have to close and come in the next morning to open. It's so stupid. Management doesn't know how to schedule.

Company Image

Smoking mirrors. The romote a great place to shop when in reality there's never enough staff to help customers and we're so burned-out with all of our daily tasks, i.e. IRPs, freight, Cycle Counts, Code 3s, Code 50s, Cart Runs, that by the time it gets we're burned-out and miserable. Then you get sarcastic remarks from Management who just stands around talking with each other.

Job security

Can't believe a word they say, considering they knew about Layoffs and lied to us daily. Management can't be trusted.

Handicap Accessibility

Flat floors for wheelchairs and power lifts to reach high places.

Workplace Safety

It's okay, but more cameras are needed.

Challenging Work

The real challenge is how to keep your cool because there's so many bad things going on every single day.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Reinstate the Bright Ideas Program. Listen to your store associates - a lot of us have good ideas who can save and/or make a lot of money for the company. Add Foreign Language software to the Intranet. This can help us to help non-English speaking customers.

What I like about the company

They are closed for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

What I dislike about the company

Managers are terrible. They lie, they're lazy and they back-stab to get ahead. Most unethical place that I've ever worked at. Management survives on lying and listening to their cronies who want to get ahead by sucking-up to them. When it comes to open positions, they already have someone in mind and "fudge" the Interview process. When it's close to Bonus Times, they have the associates cheat on Customer Surveys in order to get their Year End Bonus.

Company culture

Excellent, tolerant, respectful, invested in employees

Level of Autonomy

I ranked low but in reality, it isn't entirely appropriate for employees to have much autonomy when it is crucial that Lowe's maintain a consistent brand over a huge company.

Overall Compensation for your work

While it is common to hear the "wages are too low" feedback throughout reviews of any employer, Lowe's wages are in fact, below standard. Do not expect to make above $30K in a management position. Most associate positions will be below $12 an hour. Specialist - an integral position for a company that values experienced, professionals with technical knowledge to assist DYI homeowners - will be paid below $20. Benefits are fair but not great. There is a 401K and stock options.

Work-Life Balance

Here in lies Lowe's biggest area of opportunity. They require complete commitment, without exception, to open availability. This means from 6am to 10pm, every day of the year. You will not be able to take classes, volunteer or do anything outside of work that requires a regularly scheduled commitment because Lowe's will only hire those who commit to 100% availability. You schedule will fluxuate on a daily basis and you will not know your schedule until about 15 days out. Your life will have no regularity or richness from outside activities. Unfortunately, for a smart company, Lowe's will continue to lose valuable human capital both through missed opportunity hires and current employees who cannot dedicate their entire waking lives to Lowe's - particularly for minimum/low wages. Unfortunate!

What I like about the company

Lowe's believes in a safe, respectful work environment. Employees are treated fairly and encouraged to support each other to achieve company goals. Overall a pleasant, comfortable work environment.

What I dislike about the company

Lowe's needs to move to a shift-based staffing structure and evaluate wages.

Company culture

The company is very team driven and family oriented.

Support from Management

The company encourages communication and involvement at all levels of the operations; although there are times that the individual leadership at the store levels may not involve employees in as much communication and participation as they should.

Teamwork

Although every store is different, at the majority of the stores I have worked at I have experienced a tremendous amount of teamwork, togetherness, loyalty and pride.

Level of Autonomy

Store leadership encourages autonomy and supports employees to make decisions on their and to work independently.

Communication

The company communicates daily, even hourly, and provides many avenues to communicate with employees and provide them with information.

Gender Equality

Lowe's encourages women in all positions, including management, and supports gender equality.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Lowe's believes in supporting all generations of workers and also finds that the retired workers are often very well-suited to our business.

Career Development

Lowe's strongly supports career development and drives programs throughout the company to help associates with their career goals.

Overall Compensation for your work

My particular position of HR Manager is compensated well below the market average especially when you take my personal education into account, but Lowe's provides an excellent benefit package and is a great place to work.

Office/Work Environment

Lowe's promotes a very safe work environment. But it is a warehouse and work often includes heavy lift and strenuous hours on your feet.

Eco-consciousness

Lowe's is very environmentally friendly and provides many avenues for recycling and other energy saving methods.

Work-Life Balance

Lowe's provides many, many benefits to help employees achieve a positive work/life balance.

Company Image

Lowe's has a positive company image for the most part; Lowe's needs to focus more on communicating this to the public!

Job security

I am a senior HR Manager in our market and although I feel secure for the most part there are always rumors and test in other markets that remove HRMs from the role we have now and that is often worrisome.

Handicap Accessibility

Lowe's provides handicap parking and wheelchairs for customers although the condition of the wheelchairs is difficult to maintain and usually each store only has 1 electric chair.

Challenging Work

I am very proud of the work I do. There are days and specific times of the year when my work is more challenging but overall I enjoy what I do and am happy with my accomplishments.

Inclusive/Diverse

Lowe's values not just diversity of culture and ethnic backgrounds but also put a strong emphasis on diversity of thought.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Continues to provide opportunities for employee involvement and continue driving engagement within the stores.

What I like about the company

Lowe's provides me with flexibility in my work schedule and offers a great work/life balances. Lowe's has exceptional benefits and truly cares about the employees.

What I dislike about the company

There is always uncertainty about the changes that might come, with rampant rumors of downsizing and changing....that makes it unnerving sometimes to even come to work.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Wake up, decide what retail you are in...you try to fit in so many boxes, you don't fit in one and do it well. Treat employees with respect, don;t lie, and get rid of "Love Where You Live" It is a cliche, that doesn't work

What I like about the company

The co-workers, we are all in the same boat.

What I dislike about the company

We are understaffed, appease customers, that don't speak english, management is vacant, and the buyers for all store's do not know environments of different locations. Management does not abide by the rules, we work so hard, for so little money, and everyone is part time help.

Company culture

Lowe's communicates a wonderful vision, however, still needs to work on employee consensus.

Support from Management

Management heavily leans on the few driven employees to get the job done. others are given the privilege of the social pubic relations status; while others just simply get through the day by riding the wave of low profiled task and responsibilities. A common practice in the retail workplace.

Teamwork

Unless the Phrase "It is who you know, not what you know that matters!" means team work.

Level of Autonomy

At Lowe's all employees are most certainly empowered!

Communication

It is in the area of communications that the biggest challenge lies at Lowe's.

Gender Equality

Lowe's is fair towards gender equality.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Appreciation for the true and tried mature older generation is slowly but surely disappearing.

Career Development

Lowe's most certainly has career development, however, promoting at Lowe's will vary from store to store based on the emotional intelligence of the leadership. Some managers will lean on favouritism surrounding themselves with people they want in the innermost circle; while others will put the corporates vision needs first and hire not the best fit for the job, but the best person for the job regardless of age, race, gender, or belief.

Overall Compensation for your work

There is much improvement opportunity at Lowe's in pairing true productive employees with proper compensation.

Office/Work Environment

There are those employees at Lowe's that truly care and take great pride in sustaining that wonderful image that Lowe's Corporate believes in, and this in itself makes Lowe's a wonderful company to work for. These individuals are the pillars of Lowe's success. These are the great mentors that the future of Lowe's depends heavily on. There still are a few employees that will tell you that most rewarding experience is that of a customer who returns to thank you for the difference that you made in their life. Otherwise Lowe's has good and bad days just like any other workplace.

Eco-consciousness

Lowe's is most certainly an environmentally conscious and friendly company.

Work-Life Balance

In a constantly rotating work schedule where everyone is attempting to accommodate their personal interests and life styles; you come to a realization that attempting to properly staff the store in order to get the workload done does not make for a good nor fair work-life balance.

Company Image

Lowe's truly cares and works hard on their overall image.

Job security

While Lowe's has a nice mentor-ship program in place; the fact of the matter is that there is no job security anywhere! The biggest complaint always comes from new-hires who express that they are denied proper training by employees who fear loosing their jobs.

Handicap Accessibility

Lowe's is always compliant with handicap needs.

Workplace Safety

Lowe's takes employee safety seriously.

Challenging Work

In a retail work environment with so many variables to prevent a true workplace structure; the challenge is always there. Whether it be an emotionally distraught employee or customer; it is up to you to use your skills, product knowledge, and life experience to save the day.

Inclusive/Diverse

At Lowe's you will most certainly work with individuals from all walks of life. Diversity is important to both Lowe's and the clientèle alike.

Suggestions for improvement

  • When corporate communicates the need for change; change isn't always something that management can impose, delegate, or trickle down! Change is painlessly accomplished by the type of leadership that inspires, motivates, and brings employees to a consensus, but at no time manipulates with intent to force results to happen! Often, this change can only happen by first changing those at the top!

What I like about the company

Lowe's communicates and drives a wonderful vision.

What I dislike about the company

Not everyone who is currently working at Lowe's have a clear understanding of what Lowe's vision is about and what it will take to realize it, and they often use perspective as an excuse for the choices and ill fated decisions they make. Having a corporate vision yet doing things the same way over and over expecting to see change or better results!
