Two people in the management team are related, they both have children who work there, if anything is said about any of them ,they all find out, then they all make it difficult to work there. It will affect your performance evaluation. I've watched them push people out of the company by doing this, so no, there isn't a climate of fairness and trust. What you learn is to keep your head down and mouth shut if you want to work there. Don't think finding another job will solve the problem. Their company policy is never give out reference. At the same time, I've over heard a manager talking to another Dental office, and tell them if they hired any more of their former employees, they would not be sending anymore patients to them for difficult procedures. When a Dentist can not perform a procedure, they will refer out to a specialist. This how they help each other out and gain new busines.
Support from management
Management was not supportive of employees needs, whether it being business related or personal.
Working with other Dental Assistants and doctors was usually fine, as long as you stayed on everyone's side.
Freedom to work independently
The company is geared toward money, get as many patients in and out as possible. You wanted to keep your job, you didn't complain.
In regards to available information, they do keep the employees update, but it is used to their advantage. They have regular meetings for all departments separately and meetings for the whole company. Important information is left out to so groups of employees, or different information is given to some, and not given to others. Making it extremely difficult to perform your job, when nobody is on the same page. Sometimes even resulting in someone getting a write up. The management will use meetings to remind employees of things like how they are so proud the company has never paid unemployment to anyone and has only lost one case in court, and as employees we should remember that.
In this field most dentist are male and everyone else is female, this holds true at LWSS. They do have female dentist, but do get annoyed when one has to take maternity leave. A manager was heard telling a hygienist, after her third pregnancy there, she better not have another because she takes to much maternity leave.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Just like with everyone else in the company as long as you are in perfect health and perform your job with limited interruption for medical reasons, they are perfectly happy with you.
There are two ways for career development at LWSS. If your family member of one of the higher ups your future is secured. Another is, if your on the good side of the higher ups and don't make waves, they'll make you a management. Other wise you have to go to school(all ways on your own time), and never paid for by them. Even if your going to school to further your career in dentistry, if your not liked by company, they will make it difficult to take the classes, by not allowing time off. They do this to some people but not all. If your a child of a dentist or management your approved for all the time off you need to take classes. If your not a family member, better hope your one of their favorites.
Overall compensation for your work
Many other employees left and whent to other practices for better money. Recently LWSS raised (some)of the employees pay rates, because of this.
Office / Work Environment
The condition in the newer offices, is very good, and they usually have everything you need to perform your job. But if your working in an older office or an office that doesn't bring in that much money, you'll be hard pressed to find anything., and good luck if anything works properly.
On one had several of the Doctors go to underprivileged areas in other countries and do free dental work. But on the other one of the same doctors had said to throw away glass syringe carpals in the regular trash, even if they had blood in them. They should be placed in a sharps container, there's always a possibility of them breaking and cutting someone if they are put in with the regular trash.
Ther is no work life balance. Yes at the time you are hired you are told that you will have to travel. Which means you could have to go to two different offices that day. As well as time to travel and compensation for the travel. What they don't tell you is, they only give you 15 min to travel from one office to another. Traveling from one their offices to another in lunch traffics, in Hampton Roads takes longer than 15 min. That's your lunch hour time taken driving in traffic to work in another office, what time do you have to eat? Their solution, eat in your car on they way there. They say you can leave early to drive to the other office if you don't have any patients, but you don't get paid for it, you loose the time on your paycheck. In order to get the three dollar compensation, it's your responsibility to tell the manager before you leave to go to the other office, heaven forbid you forget. Trying to get it back when you notice it missing on your paycheck, yeah right. So in the end it's a hassle to try and get the compensation they owe you, you have to clock out early and get less on your paycheck, and all the while try and eat in your car thru heavy traffic and not make a mess all over yourself, because this is a dental office and your expected to be clean and presentable at all times,
The image isn't reflecting reality hear. So many employees have the same complaints. If your not a Doctor, management or a favorite/family member, than you get walked over because you expendable, and easily replaced by someone who will do the job cheaper. On top of it they will make getting a new job difficult, because you left them.
The fear of becoming fired or pushed out was always there
The expectation at the company is to be healthy at all times and not become a problem
I'm the dental field by OSHA standards our scrub uniform jacket should be washed by the company due contamination. The hygienist, dental assistant, and lab technicians jackets get taken home, because the office only washes the doctors full uniforms.
I felt a sense of accomplishment when finishing a difficult case, but it had nothing to do the company. It was seeing a patient come in with years of neglect to their mouth, due to fear and embarrassment, and seeing the face when all the work was finally completed. Seeing a person who hasn't smiled in years, look up at you with the biggest grin, and have them tell how very much it means to them, is the reason why I wanted to do the profession. Helping a person with their fear and overcoming it is what I set out to do. My first experience with a dentist was at 19 and I had a very difficult extraction, my parents never educated me on dental hygiene, they came from a generation that didn't worry about such things. LWSS at first glance is a very nice place. But after being there for awhile you start to see how they really are. Your told from the beginning that you should stay because you can find a different job without years of experience. So you stay. The more you put up with, until you can't anymore.
Inclusive / Diverse
No, only the Doctors and management make decisions, lower employees need not give opinions, is the general attitude.
