Teamwork

We are encouraged to help each other and management will jump in and help if needed/possible.

Gender Equality

Anybody can workout in any department, regardless of sex.

Attitude towards older colleagues

They encourage them to do as much as they can but without hurting themselves or overdoing it

Office / Work Environment

You can set the thermostat where you want while you're cleaning vacant rooms-you have to set it a certain temperature before leaving the room. However rooms with guests have to stay where the guest has it. You can turn on any of the lights you need while in the room. Vacant rooms have one light left on when leaving and rooms with guests you only leave a light on if it was already on, and you have to keep on if the guest had it on

Work-Life Balance

You start in the morning but how fast you get done all depends on you and how fast you go. You have to get all your work done before you can leave for the day

Handicapped Accessibility

There are 9 handicap accessible rooms, three different styles of tub/shower setup

Challenging Work

The work itself isn't very hard, but it's very physical. There's a lot of walking

Suggestions for improvement

  • Just getting more employees, and we just hope they stay

What I like about the company

A guest left their wallet on the bed. It was on top of the sheets so I was still able to mostly make the bed without disturbing the wallet. I never touched it but made the bed, also leaving a note on the pad of paper that's on night stand saying 'made the bed as best I could without moving the wallet.' That way they were reassured it hadn't been bothered. The guest (who had had a bad experience at another hotel and had us recommended to her by a friend) was so impressed that I, not only left the wallet intact and untouched but also still neatly made the bed, that she contacted corporate and told them the story. The head of our hotel (our hotel managers boss) emailed our manager and said he was 'wowed' and I got an award. Its called the HIWART award and each letter means something and there is a pin for each letter that an employee can receive to wear on their shirt to show they won that award. I got the T for trust because I was trustworthy. Then about a week later, the president of the company who owns the hotel did a Skype video call during our daily morning 'huddle' and had me step into the middle of the room and awarded me with the H for honesty. He also awarded me with a $25 check and what they call the Presidents award, which is an award for exceptional customer service. It can be awarded to any employee at any of the hotels-in our district-the company owns and it's the first time an employee at the hotel I work at has gotten the presidents award. It has made me feel appreciated and valued as an employee. I feel really good about myself as well and it has made me like my job even more.

What I dislike about the company

The only bad thing is just that we have been short staffed in the housekeeping department, except maybe 2-3 months, causing us to have a bigger work load and to be there longer

Company Culture

The Front Office staff had a very positive and supportive work environment.

Support from management

Management supported me and provided training that supported my career goals.

Teamwork

We had an "open door" policy so employees could talk to management anytime. The cafeteria was a great place to interact with employees from other departments.

Freedom to work independently

The Front Office representatives were empowered to solve most customer issues without having to involve the manager or supervisor.

Internal Communication

communicates well with its employees.

Gender Equality

Women and Men were treated equally and seemed equally represented in all departments.

Attitude towards older colleagues

The hourly employees and management ranged in all ages.

Career Development

Marriott values its employees and provides training and advancement for each employees desired professional growth.

Overall compensation for your work

I was satisfied with my compensation. When I worked for Marriott in a high cost of living city, Marriott provided COLA.

Office / Work Environment

The front office and lobby area was very comfortable, open and everything needed to do our jobs successfully was provided.

Environmental Friendliness

Marriott is an environmentally aware company so I believe their recycling programs reflect this.

Work-Life Balance

The Front Office had multiple shifts so we were able to work the shifts that worked best with our personal lives. I liked the afternoon/night shifts which gave me every day to go on hikes, run errands, etc. I didn't have to wait til weekends to enjoy the outdoor activities.

Company Image

Marriott was a great company to work for. I was proud to say I worked for Marriott.

Job Security

Marriott is a stable company and provided great job security.

Handicapped Accessibility

Yes, Marriott is ADA compliant.

Workplace Safety

Safety training was provided individually through staff meetings. Safety was a top priority and we had an "Accident Chart" that kept track of how many days the hotel went without accidents. If I remember right, if we went a certain number of days with no accidents, if I remember right, I think it would be celebrated by having a celebration cake in the employee cafeteria.

Challenging Work

It was very challenging and satisfying.

Inclusive / Diverse

The employee group was very diverse and everyone's ideas and opinions were treated equally.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I have no improvements, Marriott was a great employer and I really enjoyed working for them.

What I like about the company

Marriott was a great company to work for. When I went from hourly employee to management, I was provided a 3 month training program that trained me in the other departments. As a Front Desk Manager, this training allowed me to help our customers better as well as helped me communicate and interact with the other departments in a positive way which would also give our customers a better experience. I would recommend Marriott as an employer to my friends and family.

What I dislike about the company

I can't think of any constructive feedback, I thoroughly enjoyed working for Marriott and I felt supported in my position and my professional growth was also supported and encouraged.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Give the employees back the flexibility we had with scheduling. Quit taking away things from us, like vacation time/time off without pay. Quit changing policies. Respect employees. RESPECT EMPLOYEES. I can't say that enough. Treat all employees equally. Don't disregard employees who work late or early shifts. All attempts made to reward employees and to motivate employees is only given to employees who work "normal" hours and have breaks at normal meal times. If you work a closing shift, nothing is done for those employees that is done for others, such as free meals or holiday parties. Allow employees some flexibility with scheduling like they used to.

What I like about the company

I used to love the job, it offered flexibility, and a great work/home balance. The hotel discounts were great, and often available. There were consistent raises, and lots of opportunity for advancement, working from home etc. In the last year everything has changed, and I mean everything. Salaries are capped, hotel discounts are rarely available, all of the scheduling flexibility is gone, time off/vacation hours was cut by 75%, managers have come and gone, I've had 7 managers in the past year. Turnover is extremely high. I used to be proud of working for Marriott, loved my job, loved everything about it. I don't foresee staying with the company much longer.

What I dislike about the company

I disapprove of all the changes being made in the past year. All of the flexibility with scheduling is gone. Everything has turned into corporate and nothing is personal anymore. There was a saying that Mr. Marriott always said, that if the company takes care of it's employees, the employees will take care of the guests, but the company is no longer taking care of the employees. In fact, the company has turned to treating employees like garbage. Complete and utter garbage. Turnover has been so high, and guests know this. Guests know that the people they are talking to on the phone don't know anything. I work on the phone and talk to customers every day in my job, and every single day I will have someone say they've had to call 2 or 3 times or have spent an hour or 2 on the phone to resolve a problem that I end up fixing within minutes, because I know what I'm doing from 12 years of experience. But since turnover is so high and so many people are new, and don't have a clue what's going on, they don't know how to fix those simple problems that end up becoming much more. Just this week I found out that our time off hours was cut by 75%. We used to be allowed 80 hours per year that we could take off without pay, and that was cut to 20, and here it is, mid november, and we just found this out, effective Jan 1. Vacations for next year are booked and paid for and I will now have to choose between my job and my vacation, and after 12 years, I'm without a doubt going to quit, if I can't take my vacation, because this job has nothing to keep my happy, to keep me motivated. I have not had a review in years. I have not even had a call monitored in the last 6-8 months. I am given no feedback whatsoever. Now I've been told that my salary has been capped and I won't get any more raises. So there is nothing to motivate me to stay. The company only cares about the company, and no one cares about the employees anymore.
