Company Culture

It is a culture dominated by the owners. As a result, there is an atmosphere of uncertainty. (The managers will not make decisions most of the time. And when they do, you can't count on them remaining as objectives.)

Support from management

Practically non-existent. One example is they are unfamiliar with the concept of design specifications. Management makes a feeble attempt to define the product.

Teamwork

Mechanical engineering groups if weak and unfortunately they usually lead the design effort. As a result, there is not much communication.

Freedom to work independently

Very poor in this area. Supervisor feels the need to dictate every move of workers. Very little input from the rank and file.

Internal Communication

Lots of meetings, but very little gets decided because of the previous category.

Gender Equality

I have no experience with this one and cannot comment.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Watch out of this one. Senior workers are not appreciated.

Career Development

Not so good here. If it costs money you probably won't get further training unless they have to do it.

Overall compensation for your work

If you are a young person with a family, be careful before you hire on here. Salary is based on company sales, so you can never count on the same paycheck every month. And they only pay once a month. There are no raises or reviews. You only advance in salary if you get a promotion. Benefits are not so good. The medical insurance is poor and the 401K sounds good, but it takes 5 years before their contribution is vested.

Office / Work Environment

When I hired on my office looked like a salvage yard. Everyone had 30" computer screens. Mine was a 17". The machine locked up when two applications were open. I was not a happy camper.

Environmental Friendliness

I never say concern for any of these metrics while I was there.

Work-Life Balance

I would call this okay.

Company Image

I would think that by now, the image issue would be pretty well defined by the other categories.

Job Security

No job security here. They will continually hire when they are in the process of downsizing. They are continually looking for employees that have further education and skills, but more importantly, cost less.

Handicapped Accessibility

This seems adequate.

Workplace Safety

Monthly safety meetings.

Challenging Work

No. I was there a short time and accomplished essentially nothing. See earlier categories.

Inclusive / Diverse

No. But I think that this diversity thing is way overblown anyway.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Once again, see previous part of the survey.

What I like about the company

There wasn't much.

What I dislike about the company

I think I have taken care of most of it in the previous part of the survey

Company Culture

Very strange place. Has been in business for 6 decades but seems to be unaware of the rest of the world.

Support from management

Not very much. The people that should be leading are gone all the time. This gives the low level managers to much authority. As a result, many wrong turns are taken.

Teamwork

Not nearly enough. See Leadership Support.

Freedom to work independently

Autonomy is not allowed. Everything is controlled by project engineer.

Internal Communication

Privately held company. This has its downside in that everyone who is not an owner is afraid to make a decision. As a result nothing gets done.

Gender Equality

Several of the owners are women, so equality seems good to me.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Very poor here. Borders on the verge of age discrimination.

Career Development

Not much.

Overall compensation for your work

Be very aware. Salary is based on monthly sales. Great when things are selling. Not so good when they are not. Medical insurance stinks. 401K takes 5 years to vest. No raises unless you are promoted. No reviews at all. You live in a vacuum.

Office / Work Environment

Working conditions are okay. But be aware that there are three locations and much time is spent traveling between locations. Not an ideal situation.

Company Image

Image is not so good. Most of fellow employees are there because they have to be.

Job Security

Don't count on any here. In fact there is a constant hiring cycle. If the company finds someone better, you have a good chance of being canned.

Workplace Safety

Monthly safety meetings.

Challenging Work

Not at all. The product is fairly simple, but there is a great effort to make it complicated.

Suggestions for improvement

  • The problems are deep. I doubt that they will ever be solved.

What I like about the company

Have nothing good to say here, so I will say nothing.

What I dislike about the company

I have already said most of it. If I were looking for a job, it would not be at this place.
