The firm culture is good. There is an effort to reflect the core values at almost all levels.
Support from management
Litigation group in Baltimore is terrible in this regard.
Colleagues seemed eager to help each other out.
I never experienced a problem with communication.
Attitude towards older colleagues
I was hired and enthusiastically welcomed at 49 years old.
Not much in the way of a career path for staff. And they call Legal Secretaries "Practice Assistants" which sounds a bit like a downgrade. But there are opportunities for monetary award and recognition for doing a good job.
Overall compensation for your work
Salary is a bit below market, but the benefits package is one of the very best I have ever seen at any firm.
Office / Work Environment
I was in the Baltimore office. Good location. Office is moving in November 2017 to the Inner Harbor area. New office space is much smaller.
The firm pays lip service to striving for a good work life balance. However, in the Baltimore office in the Business and Securities Litigation Group, there is absolutely no interest in striving for work life balance.
Inviting image. Baltimore Litigation group doesn't measure up in this regard.
I worked in the Baltimore office in the Litigation group. There is a revolving door in that group for staff and associates. Partner is extremely difficult to work with. Because of high turnover, the workload is oppressive.
Inclusive / Diverse
There are many diversity initiatives and a good mix of people at all levels.
Suggestions for improvement
- The partner in charge of the litigation group in Baltimore should be trained in the management of people. Job seekers should avoid working in a position that reports directly to this person.
What I like about the company
Excellent benefits, wellness program, most people working there were upbeat and seemed glad to be there.
What I dislike about the company
I disliked working in the Baltimore Litigation Group. The partner in charge was dismissive and disrespectful. Given to yelling, screaming, cursing and making a scene. Made disparaging comments to employees about others in and outside of her group. Set a terrible example for associates in their treatment of each other and staff. Constantly and excessively imposed on my personal time which was unrealistic for an employee in my position (secretary). Her department should be avoided.
