Supervisors seem to commend only CERTAIN employees when those employees have successfully convinced upper management of their value, then threaten to leave if they don't get a raise. Otherwise, those who work the hardest generally get lip service at most and ignored. Company culture destroys climate of fairness and trust by allowing one department to undermine or habitually go-around another (or another part of the same department) year after year DESPITE empty commitments by the manager to address and correct the issues.
Despite endless leadership training seminars, teamwork is NOT a culture that is fostered and enforced at Meridian Products. It is a culture of silos and fiefdoms where one dare not speak up and challenge the status quo.
Departments are regularly left in the dark while key members of management or other key department are out on vacation or other appointments or while customers are informed well in advance of new product before those within the company who are necessary to develop and roll out said new product have even HEARD of it.
Women are not considered equal. Consider that company wide there was only 1 woman among all the managers, supervisors, and sales team. IN ADDITION: If you happen to be gay or lesbian and that news happens to get out, consider that career suicide; your days at Meridian Products are limited and your career is OVER!
Attitude towards older colleagues
Older colleagues are hired and respected. Longer serving colleagues are sometimes TOO BLINDLY supported even when they can be so completely going down the wrong track; other long-serving employees seem to get absolutely no support when they deserve at least some; there is NO CONSISTENCY.
There are plenty of promises of career development, additional training, travel to trade shows though none of it actually happens. Advancement happens within the family but does not happen otherwise.
Overall compensation for your work
Excellent benefits; only very slight pay increase over the past 5 years.; NO ANNUAL PERFORMANCE REVIEWS FOR PAST SEVERAL YEARS!?!
Office / Work Environment
Key office is in an ILLEGAL work space shown on a blueprint as a storage space on a second floor and not handicapped accessible; bathrooms are habitually filthy dirty and inadequate for number of employees; no official break room anywhere on site; office areas are constantly 20 degrees too cold;
For a company which works with wood, it does a terrible job communicating its environmental efforts. Further, with regard to social efforts, the "unwritten" code is very intolerant toward anyone who is "different" in ANY way what so ever, especially LGBTQ.
Company does an EXCELLENT job in encouraging employees to put their families first and take the time they need to attend to children, spouses etc. Also, great efforts are made to honor vacation requests, regardless of whether or not the 2 weeks notice has been given. There can be some peer pressure with regard to working hours but in most cases, when management becomes aware of this, it is dealt with appropriately.
Most employees are looking for other jobs; few are "proud" of working for Meridian Products. None have any respect for upper management because they are never there OR are so out of touch with the actual business that when the DO interact with those who know the business they create a HUGE mess.
The owner announced that he may retire...over 2 years ago. This has set off huge insecurity about the company's future, leaders jockeying for position to succeed the existing leadership and power struggles galore.
Absolutely not! Key office areas are on the second floor in ILLEGAL office areas (designated as storage areas on blue prints for insurance purposes), with no bathrooms or elevators to those levels, nor proper fire escapes either. No handicapped accessible ladies bathrooms.
You do get a sense of accomplishment after completing a task and can be proud of the work which has been done. In SOME cases your manager may notice; in most cases, not. But in all cases, if you are hoping that over the long term it will lead to the promised promotion or increases in pay discussed in the interview process, consider those empty promises.
Inclusive / Diverse
Absolutely NOT! Expressing diverse opinions and ideas is your exit ramp to the unemployment line. If you are different, non-Christian, or God forbid GAY in this company you're the pariah; don't expect to get respected, promoted or to survive long. Innuendo is not only accepted but promoted. AND, they WILL find some way to get rid of you without a doubt!
Suggestions for improvement
- Have policies that actually mean something. Create standards and stand by them. Develop understanding based on the big picture. Don't allow double standards among staffers.
What I like about the company
My fellow employees were like a family.
What I dislike about the company
The leadership. They had no operating principles which EVER stood; no policies were ever true policies but mere "suggestions." There were not even "double standards" but NO STANDARDS at all.
