Company Culture

This has improved significantly. The culture was poor prior to the change in Executive leadership.

Support from management

Decisions have been slow or not at all. Employees rarely requested for feedback.

Teamwork

A lot of dissention, especially at the top. Makes it harder to work with counterparts in other geographies or functional areas.

Freedom to work independently

If you like to be an individual contributor, Merrill is the place for you.

Internal Communication

This has improved dramatically since change in Executive leadership.

Gender Equality

Reverse equality is a problem in Controllership function. Women are provided more opportunity than men, and given more leeway to make mistakes.

Career Development

Career development needs to be a higher priority in the Finance area. There is no structure around developing career paths for employees.

Office / Work Environment

Facilities are in poor condition.

Environmental Friendliness

Merrill is not a great corporate citizen. Needs more community and other social efforts.

Company Image

The image of the company varies depending upon the functional area. Merrill has a poor reputation in the St Paul Finance job market, which is due to bad experiences from current and past employees, and contractors.

Job Security

Your job is safe at Merrill because most managers do not know what their people do.

Challenging Work

Too many fragmented systems and processes cause a lot of manual efforts you would not see at other organizations.

Inclusive / Diverse

Different opinions are welcome, but there are so many managers and executives, that getting approval to execute is difficult.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Adopt a continuous improvement culture. Publicly recognize high performers, and not just those who services clients.

What I like about the company

A lot of opportunity to make a difference. High performers are recognized. Culture has improved significantly since change in executive management.

What I dislike about the company

No consequences for poor performers. Some functional areas are survival of the un-fittest. The facility in St Paul needs major renovation, or re-locate.
