There is a definite drive to push out older workers in favor of younger, cheaper workers.
Oddly, MetLife values diversity (i.e., which they define as hiring, supporting, advancing, young, non-white employees/candidates) over anything else, even legal talent. Consequently, the quality of the legal department has suffered greatly, particularly under the current General Counsel.
