Company Culture

It is so difficult to work for this organization that there is a high rate of turnover and the company fails to achieve fairness and consistency. I feel bad for new (non-management) employees who come in with excitement and ideals, only to learn the hard reality of working there.

Support from management

Management habitually understaffes departments without cutting back the workload. To make matters worse, they make no effort to make the staffing needs known to their superiors. This creates a very stressful and unhappy workplace.

Most management walks around as an elite class and insulate themselves from the reality or concerns of their staff.

Teamwork

The workload is not fairly distributed and this diminishes the level of teamwork because everyone is so overloaded that they can't conceive of stretching themselves for anyone else.

Freedom to work independently

The workload is not fairly distributed and this diminishes the level of teamwork because everyone is so overloaded that they can't conceive of stretching themselves for anyone else.

Internal Communication

Communication is limited: if the boss needs something, they're willing to talk. Otherwise your requests (for support or additional staff fall on deaf ears).

Attitude towards older colleagues

Long-serving colleagues are often paid less than new employees (who they, in turn, get to train).

Career Development

Options are very limited for a transportation company. Metrolink is less a railroad company and more a company in the business of managing transportation. The railroad and it's front line operations are managed by contractors (i.e. Anorak drives the trains and staffs the conductors). Metrolink likes to think of itself as a company of "railroaders," but it'seems really more an overseer of public funds that happen to be devoted toward the railroad.

Overall compensation for your work

The only reasonably good thing about the organization and, if people stay at all, this is the reason.

CalPERS, 9/80 work schedule, free transportation to work.

Office / Work Environment

Adequate.

Environmental Friendliness

I see no example if or inspired drive toward this.

Work-Life Balance

From what I've seen, they're fairly flexible in giving time for doctors appointments and such, but working there is so stressful that the times you are away from work are poisoned by the knowledge that all the problems are still waiting for you when you return.

Company Image

The above comments are reflective of most employees I encounter. The relationship between management and employees is not supportive.

Job Security

There will always be working there. The question is, is it worth doing and at the price the organization exacts from you?

Handicapped Accessibility

Adequate.

Challenging Work

I'm not particularly proud of the work I do because the organization is so poorly managed and understaffed that I can't give my work the quality of attention I would like too.

Inclusive / Diverse

For the most part, yes.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Cut management and better staff the deparments.

What I like about the company

Benefits.

What I dislike about the company

Departments are understaffed and employees oveloaded. Management (which seems more plentifully stocked than the rank and file) is aloof to the workload their employees are subjected too.
