Mohawk Cares about the Community

Mohawk’s definition of sustainability extends beyond environmental issues to include improving the communities in which we live and work. We have linked our business with organizations that make a difference in people’s lives.

Our work with Susan G. Komen® is a great example. Through our “Specify for a Cure” program, we donate 25 cents per square yard of selected commercial carpet that is specified, registered and sold in the commercial market. To date, this program has raised nearly $4 million in the fight against breast cancer.

Habitat for Humanity® is another great cause that is closely linked to our products. Along with affordable homes, Habitat has become a leader in green building through EarthCraft™. Our portfolio of sustainable products make us a natural partner for Habitat, and our employees add their support through fundraising and community builds around the country.

Closer to our own homes, the Mohawk Carpet Foundation, established in 1992, is the company’s primary vehicle to support non-profit organizations in the small towns in which we operate manufacturing facilities. Because of the communities’ size, our support significantly impacts the quality of life for employees and their families. The Foundation focuses its giving on

  • Community building
  • Healthcare
  • Education
  • Public safety
  • Youth and adolescent development
  • Arts and culture.

Recent grants have included the purchase of a new engine and equipment for the Glasgow, Virginia volunteer fire department; the building of a baseball/softball diamond for special needs children in Dalton, Georgia; the renovation of an historic theatre in Roanoke, Alabama; and the construction of Habitat for Humanity homes in Calhoun, Georgia.

Since the 1950s, Mohawk and the companies it has acquired have been proud supporters of United Way (or its regional predecessor, the Community Chest) and have facilitated tens of thousands of employee donations, as well. In 2015 alone, Mohawk and its employees donated more than $1.5 million to United Way chapters, and Mohawk employees helped to shepherd those funds to United Way partner agencies as board members of multiple chapters across the state.

Mohawk is ranked as one of the greenest companies with 38 facilities sending no process waste to landfills. Click here to learn more about Mohawk’s sustainability efforts.

Mohawk Supports Veterans

During World War II, Mohawk suspended its carpet production to create cotton duck canvas for tents, sand bags, artillery cover and other military uses.

That commitment to our men and women in uniform remains alive today, with Mohawk serving as a sponsor for Operation Finally Home® and Building for America’s Bravest®, two organizations that provide accessible housing for wounded veterans and their families.

Mohawk is committed to offering all veterans career opportunities where they can leverage the skills and experience they gained in the military. The company also allows individuals serving in the National Guard and Reserves to complete annual training with no penalties.

Job Insights

Director, Operations, Logistics, and Pricing
Senior Director, Custom Design and Development
Commercial Pre-Order Support Manager | Light Lab Design Center

Rebecca, Director, Operations, Logistics, and Pricing

What attracted you to this company?

Mohawk is amazing. Our senior leadership really invests in the people. We believe in our people here and we know we don’t get anywhere unless we develop our teams.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

I had quite the exhilarating experience being in the driver’s seat for an entire business segment where I took charge of the P&L and took calculated risks in taking initiatives to help grow one of our business segments. I could not have accomplished the many entrepreneurial exploits without the support I gained from upper management.

What do you like best about your job?

I love the people here. Mohawk invests in the people. I love the innovation. I love the collaboration.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?

We’re responsible for delivering revenue to the bottom line in all that we do for the logistics side of our business segment. Being recognized as a high potential for our Executive Leadership Development Program was quite an honor. The growth opportunities that came with this program through the training workshops, team building with colleagues from other areas of the business, project assignments, and exposure to our executive leaders was absolutely priceless.

Describe how your team works together.

I love my team; especially since I’m in a position to pay-it-forward by coaching associates and see them also blossom into leaders within our operations, logistics or pricing teams. We are all driven to make Mohawk remain the leader in the industry and we’re not afraid of bringing unique and innovative ideas to the table to keep us on top. It therefore came as no surprise to me when we were recognized by the Top Employer Institute for creating a great work environment for our employees.

What makes the company a good fit for you?

I was with Mohawk for 6 months and then I received my first promotion. I started as a senior financial analyst and then I became a second level senior financial analyst. And then another 6 months after that I progressed into a manager.

Do you have any tips for the interview process?

Jason, Senior Director, Custom Design and Development

What attracted you to this company?

Stepping into this role at Mohawk allowed me to focus on my passion for the world of Product development and Technical Design.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

Every day is different, there’s no monotony with what we are doing. Creatively, being able to come in and develop exciting new products each day is really awesome.

What do you like best about your job?

The flexibility that my boss employs me with so that I truly am in control of the department and what we are doing from a creative standpoint.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?

It’s been an exciting ride with Mohawk thus far! Every day is adventurous, everything is new and it’s always different – filled with new challenges that keep me busy.

Describe how your team works together.

When I leave work at the end of the day, I also feel our team has done good for the world because of all the extra volunteer activities we get to be a part of within our surrounding communities!

What makes the company a good fit for you?

Mohawk has been really great for me. I’ve been able to really grow every single year in the five years I’ve been here. Officially I’ve had two promotions but my boss has done a great job in expanding the scope of my job, bringing on new and exciting challenges every 9 months to a year.

Do you have any tips for the interview process?

The best advice I would give to someone right out of college is to not be afraid to ask questions. There is no dumb question when you’re starting in an industry, you’re not going to know all the answers. Take mentorship and reach out to those above you and around you that know things you want to learn. And go after an area of expertise or functionality that excites you. If you’re excited about your job every day, you’re going to do great things.

Harrison, Commercial Pre-Order Support Manager | Light Lab Design Center

What attracted you to this company?

I’ve enjoyed rapid career growth at Mohawk and began my career at Mohawk as part of our Associate Development Program on the Management track at our Summerville, GA facility. This was one of my most intriguing assignments – it’s where we recycle more than 7 billion plastic bottles annually; that are part of our manufacturing process for our EverStrand product – the world’s most sustainable carpet that contains 100% recycled content.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

I’m actually excited to wake up every morning, as I’m always learning something new at our beautiful facility – Light Lab Design Center.

What do you like best about your job?

The opportunity to dive into different areas and help solve problems by determining the root cause issue.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?

The pinnacle of my career came when I made the shift from leading a team of 240+ employees as a Senior Production Manager into a leadership role as a Commercial Sales Operations Manager. This was definitely new territory for me and although I was nervous, I was not afraid of a challenge.

Describe how your team works together.

Our team is faced with opportunities every day and the decisions we make continually have an impact on Mohawk’s bottom-line. The game is what I like and I’m very competitive!

What makes the company a good fit for you?

Along the way, I’ve had several mentors from top-down (Vice Presidents, to Directors, to Line Managers, and Frontline team members) who raised the bar for me each time, while still providing that much needed support from the top. They each played an integral role in helping me to succeed in subsequent leadership positions I’ve held throughout the last 5 years.

Company Culture

Culture is not diverse, priorities go towards Hispanics more than anyone.

Support from management

Had personal problems at home, got fired.

Everyone out for themselves.

Freedom to work independently

Have to work alone but not free on how the time working was spent

Internal Communication

Lower level employees are kept in the dark on what is expected.

Work-Life Balance

Spent more time working than spending time with family.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I would not hire ilegal immigrants. I would also not hire anyone who can't read or speak English because it is a requirement of the job in order to be able to do the paperwork. I would also treat the employees like they are humans and not just a number. RESPECT.

What I like about the company

Employees are very nice. Company has good benefits and a reward system just for coming to work and being on time.
