Suggestions for improvement

  • There are some efforts to become a more diverse and inclusive, but it is still an overwhelmingly male dominated company. Offering additional training to women and minorities would not only diversity the company, but would also help them appeal to a wider client base. In an effort to be competitive with brick and mortar banks, they are expanding their banking products to the detriment of their core business model. They need to refocus on providing holistic financial advice, rather than pushing cash management.

What I like about the company

It is a team-based, collaborative atmosphere. Support staff frequently bounces ideas and best practice off one another, which takes stress off the individual. There are many opportunities to earn bonuses if you’re willing to put the work in.

What I dislike about the company

They are pushing to become a normal bank and put pressure on staff to sell banking products. This distracts from the main purpose of having a financial advising team.

  • Relax the policy on working remotely to allow those who are willing, the ability to do so in circumstances where they cannot get into a physical office location.

What I like about the company

Morgan Stanley has endured through rough economic times, and come out "on top". That gives me a sense of security.

What I dislike about the company

Hard-line policies regarding working remotely. They deny non-exempt employees the ability to do so.

Suggestions for improvement

  • The upper/regional management could have an idea of the every day that hits it's frontline employees. It's like the upper management is so far removed that they don't understand what it's like talking to real clients.

What I like about the company

They are pretty stable and willing to work with you on progressing your career forward. Each location is different and, but I really do like my immediate supervisors. They're pretty open.

What I dislike about the company

They aren't great to their support staff. The financial advisors are treated pretty well but they don't make it easy for service staff to get accolades or bonuses. The new FAs have little support so they basically work the kids without support and then cut them if they don't make the rigorous program requirements.

Freedom to work independently

As a Receptionist at Morgan Stanley I was entrusted with years worth of data and given absolute freedom within the workplace. Altogether I would say that I had nearly absolute autonomy.

Internal Communication

Although it was never communicated to me by the powers that be, why I was released from my position, I received extensive communication from my team on a daily basis.

The work environment is no longer relevant because they relocated.

Company Culture

As big as the company is, the call center is still trying to develop it's identity in the overall massive realm

Support from management

Depends on how this is viewed. Your direct manager wants to see you progress. However the higher powers that be (corporate management) struggles to realize the job and sets high goals that can be demoralizing. (This is the investment world so it can be cutthroat)

Teamwork

Individuals work well within the team, but teams don't always work well with other teams.

Internal Communication

Communication varies. As sizeable as the company is, it's hard to communicate to all the employees...but the communication from manager to employee is direct and clear.

Office / Work Environment

Who can say anything good about a call center. It's not bad but with my call center history, it can definitely be better.

Work-Life Balance

There is not much overtime therefore there's plenty of work-life balance. Also once you leave the office, work doesn't ever cross your mind.

Job Security

Your job is as stable as the market. Since the market can be volatile, so can your job.

Challenging Work

Some people get complacent in their jobs...and that's fine. People want to progress but it's competitive as there are a large group of employees.

Inclusive / Diverse

This place hires newbies from the street (temps) and will mostly hire from within if attempting to go higher in the management chain. So there's a great mixture of familiar and new faces.

Company Culture

Poor unqualified management whom are more interested in hiring their friends and family then qualified hard working individuals.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Take a closer look at your middle to lower management staff in the IT Applications and Project management end. See the high turn over rate and ask yourself, why? Also, you consultants management, as well. Poor, poor, management from lazy, unqualified individuals.

What I like about the company

Capability to work from home under special circumstances. Certain colleagues were team players and made it worth the effort coming into work.

What I dislike about the company

The management culture is one of unqualified personnel whom on paper make it sound as though the procedures to escalation will be resolved by management, but in fact make a complete loop back to you as the person whom escalated without resolve.

  • Streamline, too many useless middle managers who are clueless. Escalation process should not come full circle and land back on laps of escalation originator.

Free parking, colleagues, commute.

Poor middle management, poor escalation process, poor health benefits. Promotions are too political, as in "who you know, not what you know".

In a larger office of nice co-workers, I was "on my own" within a small team of narcicists. Management was of very little assistance.

Overall compensation for your work

In this role I was dependant on my small team to grant the quarterly bonus which they referred to during the interview. They chose not to a though my reviews were good and management was not advised of any problems.

Job Security

One member of the team asked me to leave as I did not fit into her plans for the team. When I advised management, they were shocked.
