Support from management

The leadership at NTB is much akin to a kid with an ant farm. They are hands off in the worst ways, and hands on in the worst ways. Due to high turn around, many members of management are new, first-time managers, which means a great deal of micro managing. On top of this, district level management typically had the attitude of "so long as customers aren't calling me directly, I don't care".

Teamwork

As a back shop employee, teamwork is essential to being productive in the busy parts of the day. Most employees understand this, and are accommodating and helpful.

Freedom to work independently

Due to the aforementioned new management personnel, most of the work load will not be distributed evenly.

Career Development

The company has recently implemented a very educational training program for its employees. I personally learned a great deal from the Apprenticeship Program.

Overall compensation for your work

Compared to other companies in the field, NTB pays considerably less. NTB pays marginally better than entry level food service.

Environmental Friendliness

This is a company that has no interest in protecting your privacy out your rights. The most important thing to NTB is making money off of their customers, whether by ripping them off, or actually providing a quality service.

Work-Life Balance

I can personally say that long work hours and low competitive income meant that I spent a vast majority of my time at the job.

Job Security

While the company does endeavour to keep its employees employed, they do not necessarily provide an enjoyable work experience or pay. Therefore, their turn around rate for employees is exceptionally high.

Workplace Safety

Safety training is on par with industry and federal standard. However, much of the safety equipment is damaged or in need of maintenance, and is hazardous to the safety of employees (ie vehicle lifts)

Challenging Work

The work in and of itself is very satisfying.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Pay employees more. Take action to mitigate employee conflicts. Have more reasonable work hours to balance work and home life.

What I like about the company

The camaraderie with fellow employees.

What I dislike about the company

The lack of communication from the bottom levels to middle management. The inability to mitigate conflicts between employees. Very low pay compared to a high level of responsibility.

Company Culture

It was very hard to get a compliment.

Support from management

The upper management dictated and was not interested in the opinions of its employees. Micro management was very intensive.

Teamwork

It all mattered who you hired in store.

Internal Communication

Everything was always changing before the previous game plan was given time to be implemented.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Long serving employees were hard to come by.

Overall compensation for your work

Managers were salaried for 40 hours and mandated to work 55. Commissions were constantly decreased. The pay scale was always changing.

Office / Work Environment

The stores and equipment were dated and it was hard to get new machinery in a timely manner.

Work-Life Balance

You were always expected to work more than compensated. Holidays meant nothing.

Job Security

I can't tell you how many times the managers jobs were threatened. It became a daily routine.

Challenging Work

It was challenging to work around upper management.

Upper management say they are there if you need them but do not return emails or phone calls for weeks, do not offer support at all.

Overall compensation for your work

Lowest pay in the industry, and open the most hours.

Work-Life Balance

Its common for management to work well over their required 55 hours per week. Every weekend required and holidays. While district and regional managers say their working but cant be found and do not answer or return calls on weekends.

Inclusive / Diverse

District managers like to keep their district filled with managers that look like them or they simply hire their friends that look like them.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Hire experienced professionals. Make sure training is useful and benefit the employees. Increase pay. You get what you pay for minimum wage minimum performance.

What I like about the company

Nothing.

What I dislike about the company

Monitor managers, district managers etc. Maje sure they are engaged and contribute to the team equally. Hire people with automotive experience. Automotive is to complex to hire non experienced individuals.

If you were recognized for an achievement you were quickly put down for shortcomings elsewhere.

There wasn't a feel good factor. Nothing was ever good enough and no matter how much time was spent in the store it wasn't enough.

It all comes down to the team you hire as a manager.

If you like 4-5 conference calls a day as a manager.

Automotive is a male dominated market by nature but the woman that really give it they're all are very successful.

Attitude towards older colleagues

The few senior workers that were there were pushed out over time. In my time most long serving managers such as myself were terminated in order to bring in lower paid inexperienced people.

Career Development

If you were entry level you had a chance. Assistant manager and manager are dead end jobs.

There was a work balance but family balance didn't matter to anybody unless you put your foot down and was willing to loose your job over it.

In my history very few people spoke fondly of this company.

Job Security

Every day you were pretty much verbally threatened to lose your job. Can't make that up.

In automotive the key was to fix what is on your abilities.
