Poor, unpredictable, constantly changing, showed favoritism, and more concerned with their personal success than the success of the group
None, never. And, it was not encouraged. If it was even spoken of, it was only for show.
So few important pieces of information were ever conveyed to everyone who needed to know. Hence there was a culture where faculty were forced into getting information from back-channels.
