Northern Virginia Community College experience report

Good side hustle for the seasoned, stable professional.

Company Culture

You will find that your colleagues are great resources.

Support from management

The deans are wonderful, but the administration lives in a different world.

Teamwork

As I said, great colleagues.

Freedom to work independently

This is par for the course, really. Your dean trusts you pretty early on, if you're at all capable.

Internal Communication

Don't ever let your password be compromised, because you won't be permitted to change it without visiting the IT department! They're very, very helpful, but out of the way.

Gender Equality

Unless you're male, of course.

Attitude towards older colleagues

I've never seen anyone mistreated for being more experienced. Once you're "in", you're in.

Career Development

Meaningless, unless somehow you are an exemplary "box-checker," if such a thing exists.

Overall compensation for your work

As I said, a good side hustle, but no broad horizons here.

Office / Work Environment

Full-timers (most) have offices; adjuncts have common areas. The support is good.

Environmental Friendliness

Again, PC.

Work-Life Balance

Although a professor's tendency is to put too much time in, there is not enough work load to be overwhelming.

Company Image

NOVA is a state school, as Virginian as peanuts.

Job Security

Forget about it.

Handicapped Accessibility

Lots of thought has gone into construction with no impediments to the handicapped. Leaves nothing to be desired.

Workplace Safety

On-campus police force. Attention to detail in other ways.

Challenging Work

Teaching's challenges lie at the heart of the human condition. Those who gravitate to it know what I'm talking about. Universal concerns of leading and influencing the young.

Inclusive / Diverse

This is the cartoonish aspect of the school. If you're a "box-checker," apply. But once you've been black-balled, stop wasting your time. PC is a religious tenet here.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Put the focus back on education. Enough already with the PC nonsense.

What I like about the company

It's very stable. The deans are wonderful. Not one is so foolish as to neglect supporting his or her professors. If you feel called to teach, NOVA is a good place.

What I dislike about the company

PC.
