Suggestions for improvement

  • When the construction is finished at Audubon Hospital and all the patient rooms are private, many of the environment issues will take care of themselves. Private, rather than public, coaching for rule/policy infractions would go a long way in the meantime.

What I like about the company

My coworkers and I are a family, and a big part of the reason I’m still with Norton is the people I work with day in and day out.
When employees are going through personal loss of a loved one, the company is supportive and offers a generous amount of paid time off and optional free counseling services.
I don’t have to worry about losing my job due to budget cuts at Norton - when the economy is down and others are firing, Norton is hiring.
Compared to many area hospitals, Norton is more current in use of technology and the latest research.
I also feel I would be supported should I choose to continue my education or want to advance within the company.

What I dislike about the company

Although Norton Healthcare as a whole strives to provide a positive work environment for its employees, this is something that Norton Audubon hospital seems to struggle with. Employee shaming tactics are sometimes used in order to increase compliance scores in areas such as hand-washing or nurse communication.
Employees who disagree with current policies are sometimes silenced, rather than questioned to try to find the root of the problem.
A constant source of frustration is the fact that the people who write the policies don’t have to follow them; they’re not the ones who are straining their backs trying to climb over furniture to get to the call light in a crowded semi-private room, or searching room-to-room for basic equipment such as oxygen flow meters or IV poles when the floor doesn’t have enough of these things for all the patients.
Staffing was a huge issue as recently as a year ago, but I have seen drastic improvement in this area. I can tell that middle management is putting forth an effort to better the culture of Audubon Hospital, but I sometimes wonder about upper-level management.

Suggestions for improvement

  • To always be stocked in the supplies we need. There are times when we have to go to other units/floors or go without because we havent been stocked properly. Also, have a standard set organization to pyxis on every floor so if you get pulled you will still be able to easily find supplies.

What I like about the company

I have worked for this company for many years and it is nice when you are recognized for a job well done and that is something we strive to do. My nursing teammates become family and we help each other out in any way possible.

What I dislike about the company

We have been short staffed at times so it is sometimes hard and exhausting when the workload is a little heavier.

Support from management

One star is too much for this category. Management does not support us at all. There is no rationalization for requirements, just a "because I said so" attitude.

Attitude towards older colleagues

They are trying to get the experienced employees to quit thinking that they will save money because they can hire new ones in at a much lower rate.

Overall compensation for your work

There isn't enough money in the world to do what we do.

Work-Life Balance

They won't use enough staff therefore we are required mandatory overtime and often mandated to stay an additional four hours after our shift.

Job Security

You walk in daily wondering if you will have a job when you leave.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Quit trying to save a buck and value your experienced employees. Treat them well and try to keep them.
